Root How do I go about doing app to sd?

Hi,

I'm new here, so please excuse any newbie questions.
I've had an Evo since launch and have had it rooted with unrevoked forever and is running a fairly old version of a rooted 2.2 stock rom. It was sufficient for running wireless tether and other root apps, until recently when I've been getting a lot of Low storage space notifications. I've already loaded as many apps as possible to sd through froyo's manage applications function.

I read that it's possible to load any app to sd with root. How would I go about doing that? Would I need to flash a new ROM or kernel?

If I do need a new ROM, what's the easiest one to restore all my apps and settings? I've done an user apps + system backup with Titanium Backup and have also done a nandroid backup through Rom Manager. I recently got a 16gb sd (class 4, i think), so I have quite a bit of space to play with.

Any help would be appreciated!

To do this right you need a better SD card than the one that comes with our EVO's. The stock one is only a class 2 and you need at least a class 4. Most people go with a class 6 or even 10.

Some ROMs are designed to automatically install all apps to the SD card. This is dependent on whether or not you have a fast enough SD card and also whether or not you have prepared the SD card to allow apps to SD by creating the proper partition on your SD card.

If you want the full details - you need to go to XDA forums and find the post titled Dark Tremors A2SD.

Also - there are apps on the market that can potentially move any and or all apps to the SD card. Those apps are generally frowned upon for whatever reason I'm not sure. But again - you don't really want to use even those apps with the stock Class 2 SD card. While you might be able to - it could very well slow your phone down to the point that you might not enjoy the EVOxsperiance anymore. Also - the stock Class 2 card is not a highly rated or dependable card and if it dies with all of your apps on it - your EVO will be buggered to say the least.

Right, so you have two options:

1) Use an app that will allow any app to be moved to the sdcard via the froyo apps2sd method. This is *not* recommended. It has been known to simply break all apps on the sdcard.

2) Use dt a2sd. This is the correct link:

[Script][A2SD]Darktremor 2.7.5.3 Beta 04 [Evo] (01/29/2011) - xda-developers

A2sd is different than the normal method. The builtin option only allows certain apps to be moved (thought via option 1, it can be overridden for anything), but it will not allow you to use widgets for moved apps, and it still leaves a portion on the app on internal storage (due to the card being fat32). So dt a2sd uses an ext3 partition that you need to create on your sdcard. It will then move *all* apps that are in /data to the sdcard. It's an all or nothing solution. You will, however, need a custom ROM. If you're running an older sw version, I'd recommend you look into updating (you'll need to new radio versions, I'm sure) and a custom ROM. It will not work with the stock ROM. See the Rooting for Dummies guide for instructions on how to update.
