Root How do I make preferences STICK on reboot?!

I'm fighting a losing battle against my own phone. I installed MIUI XJ (on my HTC Desire), great, put Espier Launcher over that, great, customized everything to look and work like an iPhone 4S. Great. Only thing is....

a) every time I reboot, a bunch of icons get knocked out of the folders they were in! Ok, I can save desktop layouts in Espier and restore, but still! I don't want to have to do this every reboot!

b) It's not just Espier! I set an iPhone keyboard as the default keyboard, but every time I reboot, "GO" keyboard takes over as default!

...And every so often, I find myself having to re-set Espier as the launcher, even though I checked "Don't ask me again".

I JUST want things to stay set when I set them, is that too much to ask?!

Have there been any updates to the launcher (or any launcher you have on the phone)? It will always ask for your preference after an update.

Otherwise I don't really know. Moving stuff to sd affects behaviour after a reboot, e.g. widgets fail because the sd is read too late in the startup. But I assume you've not moved a keyboard (do they work at all if you do?) so don't know about that. I'd check settings on Go Keyboard I guess.

I've sucessfully moved keyboards to sd but I always had to reselect them after reboot. Likewise when there is a choice of app for a given function any on the sd have to be reselected.

If you take a look at your app draw immediately after reboot you will notice that your sd apps are missing. After a few minutes the system has had time to interogate the .adroidsecure file & discover the apps. It seems probable that initially the system thinks that the previous default app is missing & therefore it removes the default setting.

I've checked and I forgot to move the iPhone keyboard to internal mem. I did, rebooted, and for the moment (knock wood), it appears to be staying as the default.

As for the icons... it's an odd problem where the exact same 11 icons appear on the desktop out of their folders, and always about 1-2 minutes after the boot - both on the latest Espier (v1.1.1) and an older version (v1.0.6). I made sure Espier was installed to internal memory. It may well be caused by Espier, as this does not occur if using GO or the stock MIUI launcher. Though I have to say, I saw nothing in the comments for Espier that mentioned this problem. Much as I want to keep this launcher, I may have to go back to GO, if I can't find a fix. (It's not that I don't like GO, it's that it does not come near to the same look/feel as the iPhone 4s that Espier achievers... and I'm going all out this time on an iPhone look!).
