Root How do I overclock with the app Overclock widget?

I'm kinda new at this oc business. I would like to know more about overclocking but I'm so confused. I installed the overclock widget app and when I click on it, it gives me two green bars that I can adjust. One says min with numbers after it and the other says max with numbers after it as well. What does this mean? What do the numbers mean? How do I use this app? How do I overclock with this app? How do I underclock with this app? When I adjust the green bars and click "Set to it" nothing happens. Is the red number on the widget suppose to change or something? It just says "806" all the time. What is the heat, in celcius, that I can't pass? Please don't say "If you don't know what you're doing, don't overclock" I'm posting this thread because I wanna know how to overclock. -_- Additional information will be useful.

I am not the guy to ask exactly what a kernel does, lol. But I do know that when you flash a compatible kernel to your phone you are able to control the speed at which the processor will run. I have tried an overclockable kernel to the shift, and it made my phone run more hot and it didn't seem a whole lot quicker. Since reverting back, I haven't tried any others. Generally speaking, along with being able to control the speed of the processor, different kernels can help with prolonging battery life as well, because you are able to underclock when the phone is sleeping.

All that being said, you need to make sure that you flash a kernel that is compatible with the rom you are running, and that you follow the devs directions for flashing the kernel as well. If you look over at xda, you will be able to find all you need regarding the kernels....

Does anyone know what Android files are used to manage overclocking so one can manually edit those files to overclock? I ask because, if it can be done, then one doesn't have to install a kernel to overclock. Overclock can then be achieved by rooting and modifying files.

Oops - I didn't realize this post is in the EVO forum. I'm asking for my HTC Rezound.
