Help How do I put stock Android onto a cheap Android phone from ebay?

Nathsem

Lurker
I have an old Android phone that I'd like to use as a backup to my Samsung Galaxy S3, but it's from Ebay and it has it's own version of Android on it already. How to I get rid of that and use the original Google Android OS?

(Also, I do NOT want to use Google Launcher.)

Thanks

Simple answer is you can't.
Stock android is built for nexus devices.
You might find a close to stock custom rom like Paranoid Android or Cyanogenmod for it but it's highly doubtful on an unknown device. (what phone is it anyway)
I'm afraid you're probably stuck with what you payed for mate :(

Ah, okay. Thanks anyway!
I don't even know the name of the thing, but I doubt it'll be able to run anything decent... still, it's worth a try.
So if I wanted to put Paranoid Android or Cyanogenmod on there, what are my steps?

The first step is to find out what device you have. Seriously.

Android, like all mobile OSes, has to be built for the particular device. This applies to custom ROMs like PA or CM just as much as stock ROMs. So the only way you can install one of these ROMs is if someone has built one of the for your particular phone. And to find that out, you need to find out what phone it is.

Once you know that you can find out what rooting methods work for your device, whether any custom ROMs exist for it, whether any custom recoveries have been built for it (do not try to install a custom recovery built for a different device - that's a good way of bricking the phone!). If a suitable custom ROM and recovery exists then you need to install the custom recovery (which will probably require unlocking the bootloader - methods again depend on which device), then you can do a backup using the recovery (essential), factory reset and then install the ROM, all using the custom recovery.

But as Funky says, if it's an obscure budget device the chance that anyone has built ROMs and recoveries for it are not good.

Doesn't sound good then. Oh well, I'll just have to live with what I have then I guess.
I remember it's from Cubot, and it looks like a Cubot P10, but I don't know if that's the same. I don't have access to the phone at this moment.

No chance of finding a rom for that then I'm afraid.
I'd make the most of it with a custom launcher (i know you said no to Google Now Launcher but how about Nova Launcher?)
All it will change is the homescreens and app drawer so you'll still have to put up with the rest of the (im assuming, horrible) UI.
it'll do as a spare.
Have you rooted and rommed your s3?
I had one and it's the best thing I ever did to it :thumbsupdroid:

I thought about it and tried it, then something failed and I had to reset the whole thing... sigh.
How do I even do THAT? I'm new to all of this, if you didn't guess.

This is a test for testing
Well it was years ago but I flashed a file called CF Auto Root by Chainfire using Odin software on a PC and it did it all for me, unlocked bootloader, flashed CWM recovery and SuperSU.
Then I just had to make a backup in recovery and flash a rom.
Things may have changed though (this was over 2years ago) so best place to ask is XDA or the s3 All Things Root forum on here :thumbsupdroid:

EDIT:
WTH Is that quote all about lol. This site is going crazy I swear :D

Ah, it's not the first time we've had little glitches with quoting.

My favourite was a year or two back. We were having a rash of them, and when I reported a spam post a glitch linked the wrong post to the report. The result was that I apparently reported the site owner as a spambot! ;)

(It's curious that your glitch also picked one of Rob's posts too. I suspect there is a reason for this).
