Hello. So my brother gave me his Nexus 7 which he bought from a friend. It's been factory restored and cleared of its data, but ClockworkMod Recovery still remains. Neither of us are familiar with Android operating systems and I don't need something like ClockworkMod Recovery, I don't even know what rooting is. Also, it's taking up a lot of memory and won't let me update the operating system to 4.2.2 so I want to get rid of it. Does anyone have a simple guide for a beginner as to how I can remove it? Sorry if I seem ignorant or anything.

It's not a matter of removing it. There's a recovery ROM in the phone (there has to be). In your case it's CWM. If you want the factory recovery, you'll have to find a flashable file of the factory recovery and, using CWM, flash the new recovery.

If your device is still rooted, you can use my (free) Android Root Toolkit app (see my signature for the link to it on the Play Store).

There's an option to flash a stock recovery, but you'll have to choose the one that matches your current Android version.

I'm worried though that there are likely other changes that the previous owners made that will make upgrading a little difficult. The current version available for the N7 (even the 1st gen 2012 version like I have) is 4.4 KitKat.

If needed, you could also flash / install the factory image version of 4.4 yourself using something like Wug's or Mskip's Root Toolkits.

Sign-up with us and see this area, Nexus 7(Gen1/2012) - All Things Root - Android Forums, for more information.

Cheers!
