Root How do I root my EVO 4G?

I have a deactivated HTC EVO 4G and I would like to root it, however I am a little confused on how rooting works with HTC handsets (I am familiar with rooting the samsung galaxy phones/tablets, well sort of, I do not know alot about it). My EVO is running Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, Hboot 2.18, and HTC Software 5.07.651.6710RD (I was told that the last part (the HTC Software) does not really matter and that only the Hboot version does), I DO know for a fact that in order to root I will need the bootloader unlocked and I will need to flash a custom recovery image (amon ra's 2.3 or TWRP, just as long as it is not CWM). Another thing is there are multiple ways to root the EVO, which are the ones that are the easiest and/or will not lead to future problems along the way?

Hello and welcome!!

You got it correct about the bootloader unlock, then the recovery flash, then rom flash:)
So, you seem to know the jist of it

This guide here, is the one you want to follow to root:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html
It works, as I also have a deactivated Evo and used that guide on it and previous Evo devices (Evo4g)

If you have any other questions at all, just ask:D

Yes, I have, he referred me to this site and the same walkthrough that you provided me. Which one of the root methods would you say is the easiet? Is there a build of TWRP recovery for the EVO 4G (One of my friends told me that if a build exists then I should get it, I also know that I need to avoid CWM on this device b/c they do not seem to get along very well together)?

I would do the first one: "HTCdev method (recommended)".

In step 2 "How to get Recovery", I recommend using the "fastboot" method of installing the AmonRA recovery.:)

As far as TWRP, I personally found that to be a little wonky at times on my Evo, (I don't know where to find it for the Evo if you wanted it :( ), and as far as CWM, it's glitchy...stick with AmonRa. It's been a proven recovery:)
