how do i root my sprint htc hero and why does everyone do it?

hi im new here and see alot of people rooting there phones and was wondering why they do it and how do i do it to mine. what are the benifits to doing it and is it easy to do?

I wouldn't attempt it if you are not comfortable with it.
Its easy if you have some slight computer background or linux user experience.

After rooting you can:
Install a new rom
Use nandroid backup and other items from the custom recovery image
Un-install crapware from sprint (Nascar, NFL Mobile etc..)
Use programs that require root like wi-fi tether, one button cache cleaners
Do the Apps 2 SD card so you don't run out of room on your phone

and a few more things I'm sure i missed like the mess of applications available on the market but say you must be rooted to use.
