Help How do I separate email / phone contacts?

I was trying to delete all the random synced rubbish from Gmail and Facebook that made its way onto my phone. I succeeded and then did a manual input of the handful of contacts I want in my phone's phonebook (ie, those people I'll actually ring or text).

But now when I go to Gmail on my home computer, I see that I've deleted all my contacts *there* and replaced them with my handful of phone contacts! Oops.

Is there a way of keeping them separate? I do use Gmail on the phone but I don't want everyone who's ever sent me an email cluttering up my phonebook.
