How do I use Activity shortcuts on the homescreen

Are there any guides on how to use activity shortcuts on the home screen?

eg. Hold down finger -> Add Shortcut -> Activities -> ...

Specifically I want the vlingo app icon to open vlingo and start speaking right away. Similar to the vlingo widget, but I need to do this with an icon shortcut.
