Help How do I...

Once the phone is plugged in there should be an indication of the device drivers being installed. Once it says their installed there should be a usb symbol on your status bar. Slide it down and click on it. Select turn usb mode on. Then the phone should apear as a usb drive. Now you can insert your files. I recommend downloading a file manager to make it easier to find the files on your phone. Some good ones are es file explorer, root explorer, and astro file manager

I'm getting none of that. There is no indication on the PC that drivers are being installed (unless they had been installed in a previous attempt I don't recall).
I see no indication in the PC's system tray that there is a USB connection.
I'm assuming when you say, "status bar" you mean that status bar on the PC display.
I don't understand what you mean by, "slide it (usb symbol) down and click on it". Where is this symbol? On the phone, or the PC?
The PC doesn't seem to be recognizing the phone at all.
I am using the USB/charger cable.
I use File Expert.
This is so frustrating. Same frustration as with my Blackberry Pearl way back when.

If you want to use your phone in MTP mode (You do not have to unmount the storage to access it), you will need the drivers. The easiest way to do that is to install Samsung Kies. (It's on the tab at the bottom under "software".)

Otherwise you'll need to set your phone to storage mode as Tusk stated.

If what you mean by mentioning Kies is that I should download
it so I can then get drivers for transferring files via WiFi, I'm already
doing that via WiFi. I want to do so via USB.
I get an error msg which says, "device not detected" when I attempt to
use USB utilities and set to storage

I've had this same issue with a bad USB cord or port on the desktop. Can always try using a different cord (if you have one) or a different port.

The Kies package includes the drivers necessary for USB connections.
...which of course implies WiFi...not what I want to do.
It's weird when I go to USB utilities, then click a button to
allow transfer between PC and phone, yet the first thing it
tells me is that USB cable is still connected. That's the whole
point! I want to transfer files with the cable.

I have no idea whether the cord is bad for file transfer, but I use it ever
night to charge the phone.I even tried my Kindle USB cord.

Something wonderful, yet disturbing just happened.
On a hunch, motivated by my conspiracy theorist nature,
I connected my SGS2 to the 'net, reconnected my phone to
my laptop, and tried again.
Instant success.
My little green 'droid appeared, and when I tapped the "connect
phone to PC" (or wadeva), 'droidy went all orange, and a prompt said
I was connected to the PC for file transfer. Everthing went like a breeze.
However, the msg. from "Big Brother" was clear: "You're not transferring
any files without "US" taking a look at them, as well!" JERKS! I hope 'ya choke
on my personal info!!!
Sure, you can easily transfer personal files. But not without potentially
letting the whole world in on it.
Next time, I WILL unmount the microSD, pop it into an adapter, tben into
the card reader on my lappie!

Youre trippin. Probably the reason it worked was because your phone needed to search for the compatible
Drivers online.
