How do updates work?

Dont get this whole update thing, if there is an update out like cupcake. Doesnt my android device update?! Does my carrier have to send it out? Am I stupid? Do I have to update it manually if I unlock it?

The phone will get OTA (over the air) pushed updates from T-Mobile.

After the fact that Udate can be downloaded and you can update manually if you missed the OTA

The phone being locked or unlocked does not effect your OTA updates...

However, if you decide to root your phone, you will no longer receive OTA updates. You would have to manually update after you root.

So if I have a swedish carrier and unlock it and put another simcard in it, does this change things? do I have to manually update it?

And if I root it, will it be unlocked then? Free to use other simcards?
