How do you add apps/apk files to a rom or gapps

I have been messing with roms and such (still) :) and am trying to make a single zip file with apps/apk in it so I can install whatever rom, and/or updates and tweaks, then install the apps I want.

I have tried adding to gapps in the system/apps flder, which works but there is a snag. When I get booted up, and try and run the app it just shuts down and says somthing about "unfortunatly the app has shut down". I can re-install the app again over the top and it then works fine.

I have also tried adding them to the rom zip itself and while I can remove apps from the rom, I cannot add apps to the rom, again under system/apps.

Not being a programmer and such, with little linux/unix knowledge I'm not sure what to do.

Can this be done what I am trying to achieve, if so how?
Also am I asking for trouble or headaches trying to do this??

As always thanks for any and all help, I appreciate the efforts and help so far.

Did you check XDA?
Roms and gapps seem to be packaged the same way. So this guide might work.

[Guide]Create Custom ROMs | Modify Apks

Ill need to do a little more research but at least this is a starting point.
I personally have not built a rom since the ppc days. I went to the iphone, and am now on andriod.

Ive been thinking of starting to cook roms again.

Sweet, thanks for the links. Those will get me started for sure.

I'm not really wanting to make roms, although who knows it may take me there and I may end up with my own personalized rom :), but for now all I wanna do is basically make like gapps is, and make my own version with app installs.

I'm not sure if I need to do the rom way or the gapps way. Doing the gapps way would be much better, then I could elave the roms as is, and just put everything I personally wanna add into the gapps zip file and use it as a single zip for every rom out, basically a one stop file, instead of unpacking and repacking each rom, just unpack and repack the gapps as needed.

That java app installer from first sight looks awsome, simple and easy, JUS my speed LOL.
Sorry I am a simpleton thru and thru, so the simpler it is, the better, and if it has pics thats even better!

well I have the java file, and I have java 6 and java 7 on my machine (xp pro) but can't seem to open the file.

What am I doing wrong?

Not sure. It works fine for me. I have both versions of java 7 installed on my pc. (64 and 32)

You should uninstall java 6 though since there was a serious vulnerability in it a few months back.

maybe I have the wrong java installed?

IE: I think I have the SE but I could have a different one.....the java crap there is SO many installs I never know what to get, and they don't exactly make it easy lol

I'm gonna remove all java and start over.
I hope I'm getting the correct one, I am grabbing the Java SE 7u9 JDK file

Got java installed again and I'm doing everything correctly, but can't get it to run. It starts the java web stuff and I get the hour glass, and the nothing.

Sure wish I could make this work, it sounds like it'd be just what I'm after.

Well that's not what I was after either. it works just like apps2zip works, and apps2zip is much easier to use.

I guess to put it a better way I wanna take the gapps zip file that's already made, and add my apps to it.

It's not as easy as just dragging and dropping the files into the zip, because once I boot into the phone, the apps are seen, but if you run them you get a message as I stated in my first post, about it shutting down.

I guess there is no real "easy" way with like drag and drop of doing it. apps2zip works ok, but it'd be better if I could just drag and drop via the pc, and save or compile it as a flashable zip.
