Help How do you turn the sound down universally?

Newbie
The rocker just turns the ringer down but you still get very loud text messages or email alerts. Is there an easy way to turn it all down?
 
Under Sounds & Display I have the following checked:

Phone Vibrate
Silent Mode

Then I put the phone in Vibrate mode by rocking the volume all the way down, then one up to Vibrate.

Now everything is either silent or vibrates for me. If you're still getting alerts that make noise, maybe the application itself is overriding somehow?
 
That seems to work for going completely silent.

However, if i have the ringer turned way down but not silent, the phone will ring quiet but texts and email seem to be quite loud still.

Okay noob question, but isn't there any other way to put your phone in silent mode?? Or is the rocker the fastest way?

One thing I do miss from my iPhone is the silent switch.
