Root How does hardware acceleration work and hows it help?

Lets say that by some amazing strech of reality our allys got 2.4 ported to us. If it had hardware acceleration what is the benefit?

Velocity and Punisher/Frunisher has Hardware Acceleration already, so it wouldn't be new, and we wont be able to port 2.4, our kernel is too old for even Gingerbread to work properly.

No stagefright is a media framework that enables web streaming and media playback...hardware acceleration is where it uses hardware to render grahpics, rather than software
