I came from a long line of iPhones, seems everyone here did lol. I have been using the inspire for 2 weeks now and love it and still trying to get used to it. I am just curious does htc update their phones like apple does from iPhone to iPhone 3 to iPhone 4 etc. Or will I have to get a new phone down the road with different button locations if I want to upgrade. just trying to figure out if I need to look out for the inspire 2 next year and so forth. Just seems they have their hands into a lot of different models with the same os unlike the iPhone.

How does htc go about updating phones

Usually the carriers send over an update Over The Air aka OTA, meaning the download and update to the next version of Android is sent directly to your phone over 3G/4G/Wifi (whatever you are connected to).
You phone has a notification appear there is an update ready to download, and then off you go.
You may also force checking for an update by going to: Menu button --> Settings --> AT&T Software Update --> Check For Updates.
HTC may have their own way of updating things as well as I see that there is an "HTC Wifi software update option under AT&T Software update as well.

There may not be an Inspire 2 but I would bet that HTC will have a dual core LTE phone out later this year.

That doesn't happen as often as Apple does it. They're more likely to release new devices as opposed to how Apple releases devices. I wouldn't hold my breath for an Inspire II. It could happen though. HTC has done it before (ex: Tilt -> Tilt 2).
HTC is a real company not a bunch or scam artists with a bunch of cult members. They will release a completely different drvice with upgraded everything. Not the some phone with a couple minor tweaks. Sorry there are some things that Apple does that really irk me and that is one of them lol.
And I'm not an Android fanboy I own a couple Apple products. :-(

If you plan to get a new HTC phone in a year, it will most likely have a different model name. That may or may not actually mean that the hardware platform has changed significantly. The same is true (but in the reverse) for Apple (people will argue at length about whether each new "generation" of iPhone is an update or a completely new hardware platform.
The reality is that all handset vendors refresh their offerings roughly every 12 months to stay competitive. Handset sales for a high-end smartphone models trail off rapidly in the first few months after release. Unlike Apple, HTC new releases are not an event that you can set your clock by, but they do happen on a pretty regular 12 - 18 month schedule.
It's a safe bet that a year or so from now, HTC will have a 4.3" touchscreen phone (the Inspire form-factor) with a faster processor, more memory, faster network, etc. It will likely be running the "Gingerbread" version of Android, so it will "feel" like an update to the Inspire in most respects (though it may actually have a new model name). Your Google data and Market apps will transfer nicely to the new device, so the upgrade user experience is not much different than the iPhone.
