How does the barometer work on this phone?

Does this phone have a built-in, legit barometer? Or does it use the GPS to determine location, and wireless network to retrieve data from some outside weather source?

In other words, would the barometer work if I'm 30-4 miles offshore and getting no data signal whatsoever? Or if I'm riding my kodiak grizzly through the uncharted Yukon on my annual Sasquatch hunting trip?

the barometer is real and it does work. It's really cool. I wonder what the pressure would be over the ocean...

Yeah it works. Temp too. Its a bit slower to adjust to outdoor temps than my Samsung Galaxy S4. But then again those sensors are behind a water proof shield.

Can someone tell me how to turn on the barometer so it reads in real time? I go to "Barometer settings" and none of the choices make sense. It show 4 options: 1) Pressure sensor auto download, 2) Send to server automatically, 3) BLE watch link setting, and 4) Bluetooth setting. Number 1 confuses me because of the "auto download" part of this choice. If the sensor is in the phone, why would you have "download" anything?
By the way, I have the number one setting checked and the pressure that is displayed on my phone is 978 hPa while the nearby and same altitude National Weather Service is reporting 1018 mb (= 1018 hPa).
Thanks in advance for any explanations.
