Root How easy is it to root nowadays?

I'm looking at the possibility of sending back my phone for a replacement (my headphone jack isn't working). I rooted nearly a year ago and I'm afraid that I'm a little out of the loop as to the process required now. I've read through the "All Things Root" section (much like I did when I first rooted in February) but I don't seem to see any actual explanation as to what needs to be done with phones running 2.2. Obviously I'll be looking to root any replacement phone I get, so what am I looking at to get it done? Do these "one-click" methods I'm reading about actually work? Or is the procedure similar to when I rooted last year (I used the RSD Lite method)? I assume the replacement phone will come running with the latest version of Android 2.2 (perhaps even FRG83D). Thanks in advance for any responses.

The one-click methods will work but I find them to be flaky and not worth the hassle. If you can get RSD Lite working on your computer and it recognizes your phone, I say use it. It's more robust.

you should be fine with super one click root. Thats what I used to root my replacement droid and I still have yet to have any problem thats not a bootloop. If you dont want to do that then you can do it with the guide that involves the android sdk and command prompt.

EDIT: Both work with FRG83D

Thanks for the info. I'll look into this a bit more. One question, though. You say that you have yet to have any problem that's not a bootloop. Does that mean because you used this one-click method you encounter more bootloops than usual (compared to those rooting the "long way")?

Ever since one-click root popped up, every other question in this board has been about it. When we only had the 2.0.1 update.zip exploit and RSD Lite for 2.1, everything was perfect. These things don't screw up. One-click root is not a guarantee, while RSD is.

+1 ^^^ this. But to be clear you do NOT want to use the SPRecovery_ESE81.sbf file with 2.2, there's another custom .sbf file that works even better.
