Root How easy is it to ROOT?

It's easy (and safe when you follow the directions). I've rooted both my phones, both under hour (root, recovery and custom ROM), if you need just root (not recovery or custom ROM), it's question on minutes. Of course it has some disadvantages, like possibility of bricking the phone (but this is more related to flashing new radio or recovery) and losing of warranty.
There are 2 ways of rooting. Just rooting (onetime root or permanant root) the current system, or rooting and loading custom ROM. If you just root the official system, everything (except HTC official OTA updates) will work like before. If you root the device and load custom ROM, you get completely new system (like my Gingerbread on ZTE Blade, which was shipped with Eclair).
I have rooted my phone just to be able to sort contacts by last name (Froyo feature), if you don't want any new functions, it won't bring too much. The only (reasonable) advantage is ability to make backups.
