How GPS works?

I am absolutely new to android smartphones and I want to ask if GPS is data dependent or it works independently? More specific, using the GPS without sim card is posible?

GPS works without data connection and without a SIM card.
Most phones have aGPS which can use a data connection for a faster satellite lock but it works also without a data connection.

GPS/aGPS doesn't need a SIM card for working properly
I use my old HTC Desire HD without a SIM card for this.

Your phone's GPS would function without a data connection.
As a aGPS it'd try to use small amount of data if you wouldn't switch off mobile data, but such a small quantity of data wouldn't smash your data plan

More important is that you'd pay attention to GPS map and navigation apps! A lot of them use online maps via data connection, e.g. Google Maps and Maps Navigation.
