How headphone buttons work?

Hi, I've just shifted from Samsung Galaxy mini to HTC. I got my brother's Desire S with a headphone which is printed "HTC Innovation". It has 3 buttons; Back, Play, Next. But I'm not sure how this buttons work. In Samsung song started with a single press in play button but in HTC it doesn't. Can anyone tell me how they works?

* I'm sorry if this is a repeated post

Pressing play once on the headset controls should start the current track in the Music application without having to open the app. Does that button do anything at all on your phone?

As long as Music isn't on, a long press on play will enable voice dialling, if enabled.

Double-pressing play will dial the last number.

Back and forward buttons navigate music/radio.

What should it do when Music app is not open (e.g. I've just turned the phone on). Should it play music at one press? Mine does not. When I press neumerously (being frustrated :() then suddenly I listen music has started. And yes, pressing twice calls last dialled no.

When the Music app is not open, pressing the play control once will start the current/most recently cued track. It shouldn't take more than 1 second to start up. You should also see the Play symbol in the notification bar.

If it's not working every time, then the headset control may have a faulty connection. You can test this by borrowing another one.
