Help How is my battery? How is your battery?

No they don't call maps. They just use location services. If maps is running, it could just be maps being funny

I knew certain apps called GPS (Facebook, Google, etc.) but didn't realize that actually called up Maps as a process in doing so, although I guess that would make sense! I was thinking maybe it was my weather widget and/or live wallpaper but I guess it's just the gps initialization when I open certain apps...

I use all of those programs and my gps is never enabled unless I'm using it. what is the benefit to keeping your gps on all the time?

Not having to turn it on and off all the time? There's no point, imo, in turning GPS off since it's ONLY on and active when you use a gps activating app like Maps or Facebook. Once you exit those apps, gps is no longer active, even if it is on.

Sorry my understanding was that like wifi, or data, it is constantly searching or fixed on a signal when on therefore used battery. Do you use your maps and navigation everyday? Even then would you have to turn it off and on all the time. It takes less than a second to enable or disable it and in turn it saves on battery (at least that is my understanding)

What is the benefit of turning it off? It's not using power unless something is using it.

Every time you turn it on, it will instantly try to get a fix, regardless of whether you want it to, so simply turning it on for 1 minute and leaving it off for 7:59 could use more power than leaving it on but dormant for 8 hours.

Also, since i use GPS to track my phone if it's lost, it being off wouldn't particularly be helpful.

Good to know, I heard it used battery glad to hear it doesn't

The only advantage to keeping GPS off is that for me at least it's quite rare I need the accuracy of a GPS signal so will happily use maps & facebook etc without GPS and so it saves me battery. I keep my screen fairly dim and I get about 16 hours of life out of my S3 with normal use all day on 3 email accounts and whatsapp messaging. The biggest drain I've found was checking email accounts as had to turn that down to check every 30mins to get a full day out of the battery.

I've been following this (and other) battery related threads since I got my SG3. The first advice I picked up was to install Juice Defender, and it helped a LOT. The next thing I did was turn off all sync-ing. Definite improvement. Yesterday, I turned on my location services to allow my weather widget to update...bad idea. Immediately I noticed significant drain increase. It's back off today and my battery is draining much slower. What strikes me as odd is Location Services or anything like it wasn't showing up on my battery monitor, but there's no denying it was the culprit. It's apparently being under-reported.

That's probably because you have ur weather widget settings to update automatically every so often... And this is what drains your battery. For me, I turn off automatic updated because even though I do like to know what the weather is like, pressing the small update button only takes 2 seconds to update.

My gps is always on and so far has 3 minutes of use in a day and a half. Here are pica of recent drain. You guys let me know if this is alright...

after the newest update, battery standby drain has decreased and I was able to get a day and a half out of my phone, extremely low usage.
