How long to charge a new Note?

So I finally have my shiny new Note! I gather that I need to fully charge it before I turn it on for the first time so that all will hopefully be well if it then goes into an installation of ICS. When I plugged it in the battery icon showed up as about half full. Noe there is nothing showing on the screen 2 hours later. How long do I need for the initial charge and how will I know that it has charged? Following advice on here I will then do a factory reset once I have ICS installed OK.

Can't wait to get started but don't want to rush things and cause myself problems later.

Press the 'Home' button (the big button at the bottom of the screen) and the battery indicator will show again for a few seconds.

Thanks for the info. I can't believe I've been so retained but I left itnto charge overnight and have only just had time to turn it on now. It's in the middle of the ICS update so hope all goes well with that.
