While better than dial-up, its still dog slow (the 1 second ping is what does it). And he pays $55 a month for 500 KB down/ 50 KB up.
The laws of physics prevent satellite Internet from having any less latency than it does. Latency has no effect on link speed, although TCP will eventually grind itself to a halt unless the hardware on one end sends fake ACKs to the system sending the packets. WildBlue is 500/50 because they set it that way.
I've spent plenty of time in places with no Internet (and sometimes barely electricity), and even BGAN is better than nothing at all.
