How many GNs have you gone through?

So you are going to keep wasting your time exchanging and getting a device with similar signal. Clearly some people should stick to iphones because they do not understand how phones and signal work...

You mad bro? To quote Bobby Brown, "it's my perogative I can do what I wanna do". I can exchange as many times as I want, what does it matter to you?

I completely understand how a phone works, when it does work. I have the GN next to my Rezound and I'm getting -90 to -85 dbm while my GN is getting -110. Speed test is also better on the Rezound while the GN sometimes can't even connect to the server to perform the test.

Are these readings you're getting on 4g?

Well then I guess you really don't know how these readings work. The readings are different when it comes to 4g and the GN. Knock it down to 3g and compare again ;)

I would knock it down to 3g if the GN can even pick up 3g signal, even 3g is bad.

I know the bars are low indicating low signal BUT my phone calls are crystal clear and my downloads fast. I didn't even think to exchange it. I really am loving the phone. I do hope they push out a fix soon.

If you're getting a 4g signal then you are getting a 3g signal. If you want to compare those readings it has to be on 3g, until then you can't complain about the numbers.

What I dont understand....is how come actual use of the phone is being overlooked, ignored in all this?

By you mentioning it cant even connect to the server, it doesnt matter if the readings said -1000 and had 20 bars, if it cant connect to the server.....it cant connect to the server. While a phone right beside it is having no issues. Why would someone even mention readings, bars after you post this?

Going by bars, decibels is one thing....real world use is another.

I'm on my second Nexus, but my return had nothing to do with signal. My first one had a problem with the microphone cutting out.
As others have said, comparing signal at a store won't do any good unless you are comparing to another Nexus. I think all the other phones will only show you CDMA signal strength and not LTE signal strength. Since CDMA is more prevalent it will always show better than LTE. Now, if you switch to CDMA only and do a test you should see very similar results.

As far as returning your device over and over because of your signal, you're not going to get anything different. At best you may get one right when the update comes out. At worst, the store you are going to will get sick of you returning phones and you will end up getting stuck with one that has a real problem.
how did you decide it was a microphone problem?

I've had callers tell me at least three times they could no longer hear me. The last time it happened with full 4G coverage.

I have had the same exact problem multiple times with two different devices. No matter what anyone else says about us not understanding how a phone or signal works, that is a true example of real world use and issues. Again, I'm looking at you, Premium1, just because you aren't having problems doesn't mean no one else is or that we are idiots if we are having them.

If I can't use my phone as a PHONE, all data connection problems aside, it is unacceptable.

This was my problem as well. I was specifically told by multiple people that after about 15 minutes, my voice became "robotic" just before cutting out. This was happening in non-moving locations and calling back "miraculously" fixed the issue (for another 15 minutes anyway).

I suddenly have the urge to make another long phone call just to be sure the new phone doesn't have the same problem...

There is a thread in here where someone went to a VZW store and did a test, they took down all of the signal strength readings and then did a speed test with each phone.

They found that while the GNex had a weaker reading it had a better speed test score. So as has been stated the signal strength is not reading right, those other phones are reporting better signal because they are using the 3G signal and NOT the LTE one.
Well, I ran many speedtests at the store and the Nexus was always at half speed or less on a weak 3g signal compared to my tbolt.

Funny thing is, I downloaded angry birds on both, which is like a 12mb file, and the bolt beat it by mere seconds after a very long download for both.

That would be a microphone issue then. 4G coverage (or 3G coverage for that matter) have nothing to do with voice, 4G and 4G are data only.

I'm on my 3rd device. All devices have had the issue of the mic cutting out while haveing a conversation. It to me is obviously a software issue or maybe even an issue with ics. I have a very good 4g coverage and had 0 issues with my previous device that was a Samsung Fascinate.

I have been on the phone with verizon 8 times now to reproduce the issue. I have been able to have it happen 8 times with 4 diffrent techs. It will happen 100% of the time if you talk long enough. There is no ryhm to reason when it happens. I have been in 2 diffrent states and had it happen.

I have also tried to switch to 3g and it has the same effect. Also did this with a tech on the phone lol.

I do not want to return the phone for a razr. I really think it is a fantastic computer. I just am anoyed with it failing over and over.

Does anyone actually think a 4th device will solve this issue?

I had to get my 2nd line Nexus replaced. The external speaker stopped working all of a sudden. The 1st line Nexus is still the original one I ordered.

So he should get an iPhone because he expects the Nexus to actually work as advertised? If Verizon is going to exchange them under the guise that there are no issues, then if he chooses to "waste his time" returning them to get one that works, that's his prerogative. I mean, if Verizon wants to play the "there are no signal issues" game, then exchanging repeatedly might actually drive home to them that there may actually be issues with some batches of the phone and to address the issue.

How many GNs have you gone through and were your subsequent devices any better than the previous ones?

I'm on #2 and signal reception is marginally better, but not by much and still unacceptable to me. I will try #2 device for a week and might exchange it for another one if it does not improve to my satisfaction.

#1 I have a perfect screen, battery door fits like it is suppose to and doesn't creak, speaker sounds great and I have yet to drop a call. Overall a great phone! :D

I kept the current phone but swapped SIM cards yesterday to see if that would make a difference before returning the Nexus for good. I made just one long call yesterday but did NOT get dropped.

A bad SIM card would certainly make sense since this issue only seems to be affecting a small percentage of users (but across multiple phones for each). I plan to make a few more long calls today to be certain, but I'm hoping it was the problem as I really like this phone otherwise!

I'm on my 3rd Nexus and 3rd SIM card.

#1 - I exchanged it and the SIM card due to poor signal.
#2 - Still had signal issues and the silent mic issue on several phone calls. Corp store refused to exchange phone, but tech support sent me a new SIM card. Wound up exchanging the phone later due to a volume button that stopped working.
#3 - So far, this screen has a little more of the purple tint in settings screens (or maybe I'm just imagining it due to all the talk around here about it as of late), but my signal does seem to be better, I haven't had any silent mic issues on this one, so I'm happy now and keeping it.

Even with the slight purplish tint, the screen is gorgeous and I don't really care about the settings screens. I'm not entirely convinced that's not at least partially a software issue anyway. The reason I say that is, if I pull up a settings menu, then pull down the notification shade, one of the purplish bands flickers back and forth between purple and true grey. If it was a hardware issue of the screen being unable to produce that grey color, then that particular band wouldn't flicker back and forth. I also had that same thing on #2.

I can't say 100% that the new SIM card fixed the silent mic issue, I'm just saying I haven't experienced it again, yet.

Until there is an update you will not see an improvement in reception. All you're doing is wasting time and a good device by trading them in for another.

I have time to waste for a phone that costs 300 bucks and two years on contract, other wise you're just being lazy. Some people are experiencing issues so bad that it would lead one to believe that it is not normal. So when someone goes to the store and the only solution the VERIZON sales person can offer you is to replace it what do you think someone will do.

Maybe the appropriate response is "No I will keep this one, I have faith that all issues are common among them all and will be fixed in a reasonable time"

If your device works as you would expect it would for the price then good for you, no reason to come here and flame people that are not happy.

This 100%, I sat there at a store and we watched my phone constantly lose data connection. Watched how I was unable to stream music because of the shotty connection. Watched how my phone could not keep a connect to Wifi after the screen goes to sleep.

You can buy those wolf-tickets of signal bar display all day but hard for me to worry about displayed bars when my browser says THERE IS NO CONNECTION.

I had one GNEX, returned it and went back to my DROID Bionic on the newest firmware. It's day and night with my data connection.

Can't blame a guy for not wanting to throw away 300 bucks.

Well, technically I guess I am on my 5th Nexus. 2 the first time through, 3 this time.

Nexus #1 (release day, build date unknown) and #2 (replaced on 12/17):
- radio was fine (no drops), but weaker signal and lost 4G in some buildings.
- splotchiness (see the video screen shots here for what I am talking about: Nexus Screen - Imgur)
- minor banding, but disappeared at 40% brightness
- yellow and purple tinting (depending which part of the screen)

Nexus #3, #4 (build date 12/23):
- radio was fast when it was connected, but would drop entirely (including voice) 10-15 times a day
- splotchiness was barely perceptible
- almost no banding, even at 10% brightness!
- hardly any tinting at all

Nexus #5 (build date 11/16):
- identical to Nexus #1 with the video/screen issues but good radio.

So I'm going to go to go to Costco #1 tomorrow that I got the ones with bad radios (#3 and #4) and explain the situation. They are out of stock and expect a new shipment in Friday. So I'm going to talk to the guy and explain that I want to make sure he gets the commission (since I found out today that by swapping for #5, the guy who I bought from at Costco #2 lost his commission :( and he was a cool guy and want him to get it). So I'll wait until Friday and hopefully he is understanding and realizes I'm just trying to find a phone that works and which has a screen without the problems I had in #1/#2/#5.

Hopefully 6th time is the charm and I get a hybrid that has a good radio and screen. :)

I'm still on my first! Great reception almost everywhere. As good or better than my Fascinate. It passed my famous "Eagle Pass" test, but I only had time for one run, sadly. I couldn't be happier with the battery life. Of course my region doesn't have 4G LTE yet, so I have that turned off, but even if LTE was available here, I would only click it on when I need it. Battery life is just too good to waste on LTE when I don't need it for video viewing or downloading apps or other large files. Music, documents, email, and small sized photos are all plenty fast over 3G, and WiFi seems to be much more efficient on the Gnex than it was on my Fascinate, so I use WiFi liberally.

With my Fascinate, WiFi drained my battery like nobody's business. It literally cut my browsing and streaming time in half. Not to mention the signal is better (and dual band supported) on the Gnex. It picks up my 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands from my router. So far the distance on my 2.4GHz band is quite good on the Gnex. I am super happy with the WiFi browsing time though. I'm pretty happy with the Galaxy Nexus so far in general. I love wowing people with it.

I have so much fun, it's not even fair to other cellphones. Seriously. I charge other people's phones for them from time to time, plug in USB Christmas lights, and pay for my food with this stupid phone. I love the priceless looks I get from people. :D

Despite all my playing around, I still virtually always get a full day's use on a single charge, unless I really go crazy with it. It even survives a full day with a good bit of craziness sometimes.
