How many people are buying this immediately upon release?

I thought about doing this also but I just dont want to extend my contract another 2 years, I like being free and clear. Its a big incentive but how much longer do you think people will be paying a premium for the I4G? Soon enough the excitement will wear off and Ill be the guy with the phone not being able to get rid of it anymore for more than I paid for it.

Yep, especially since Consumer Reports did a test and said the issue was hardware related. I reproduced it in the store as I was standing there.

Consumer Reports: iPhone 4 antenna issues are hardware related Boy Genius Report

I know, off topic.

Coun't me among those that will be going out as early as possible on the 18th to buy this phone. There are a few things that I've read that made me think about getting something different, mostly the battery life issues I've read about some people having with the regular Galaxy S, but in the end nothing so bad that would turn me off of this phone.

The two major complaints most people have about the Captivate, the lack of photo flash and FFC are non-issues for me. The flash doesn't matter for me, anytime I really need to take a picture with flash, I have a digital camera I can do that with, and one that probably would take better looking pics anyway. As for the FFC, while I initally was disappointed to see this wouldn't have it, after thinking about it, I decided it wasn't going to be a big deal. While it would be neat to have, in the end, for me at least, it would probably be nothing more than a bragging point, it's unlikely I would have used it that much, and it would have mostly been a novelty.

All in all, as soon as I heard about a Galaxy S phone coming to AT&T, I had pretty much decided right then it would be the phone I'm getting. I'm stuck on AT&T for the foreseeable future (family plan and discount) so what other companies are getting doesn't really matter to me. This phone appears to easily be the best Android phone AT&T will be getting, at least anytime soon, so I don't think I'll be made to regret my decision.

Yet always still relevant.

So true eh?

Well, I'm going to say that I won't be recommending buying an iPhone 4 and then selling it, as I'm sure this issue will affect ebay sales. I'm also wondering how many people that have sold their pre-ordered iPhones are having to deal with people wanting their money back. That said, there are always people that will buy the phone, regardless of its problems. I think I'll just proceed with waiting to see how the Captivate looks.

Ynomrah- If I'm not mistaken, you've mentioned that you work for AT&T. Have you gotten to play with a Captivate yet?

I was at the Galaxy release event in NY a couple weeks ago and got to play with all the models. I spent most of my time with the Captivate since I am on AT&T. I had just updated my N1 to 2.2 that day so it was a fair comparison.

I will absolutely be picking up the captivate and probably selling my N1. The Hummingbird processor was so wickedly fast on 2.1 that it made mincemeat of my 2.2 N1. It ran 54FPS on my neocore test vs. 27FPS on my N1. Transitions were fast and smooth.

I plan to buy off contract so I have my return period if I want. My main concerns will be battery life and reception. Im dropping too many calls with my N1 and its frustrating. And NO, its not the network. Ive been on ATT for 5 years and all with Blackberries and I never dropped a call once in that time. It wasnt till I got the N1 that I started having dropped calls. So, if the Captivate works in that area then its definitely a keeper for me.
Same issue here with my N1 on T-Mobile originally and also on At&t so it's the phone for sure. Seems pretty similar actually to the iPhone 4's issue when holding it but worse because the N1 seemed to lose signal unless it was held from the top.

Getting one on launch day though!

I actually plan on picking this phone up very early on Sunday and playing with it on the plane I have to catch right after. Screw packing. I cant wait till I get back on Thursday to get it. I want it NOWW.

Blackberry has one of the highest SAR ratings in the smartphone category due to the fact that its antenna is located on the top of the phone.

Nexus one and other phones generally have their antennas on the bottom of the phones to reduce SAR ratings on their phones.

Such is the dillemma: Do you want higher radiation but good reception or low radiation but bad reception?

I actually plan on getting the Blackberry 9800 when it comes out also. I miss the call quality of the blackberry but im jaded by the Android OS now. Such is a tough life.

My Monday consists of tangents so far, so I'll lob one here. Anyone thinking of buying the iPhone 4 32 GB, selling it on eBay for $800-$900, and then buying the Captivate for the supposed $350 no contract price? You could take the difference and buy A LOT of accessories or other fun things.
I've been thinking about it but the issue with SIM cards throws a wrench in things. My current phone uses a full-sized SIM. The iPhone 4 uses a microSIM and so they'd exchange my SIM card when I got the iPhone 4. But I don't intend on using the iPhone, and would want to continue to use my existing phone until the iPhone sold and I got the Captivate (which also then uses a full-sized SIM).

I posted this dilemma in another thread looking for advice but didn't get any.

I will be getting this day one. I currently have the 3GS and I didn't think the jump to the 4 is much of an upgrade. I was also getting bored of iOS too. This will be my first Android phone and all my friends have Androids so I am actually the current outcast. Unfortunately. . . . none of the AT&T stores around where I live at have no idea what the Captivate is or a release date.

I am going to my local AT&T store tomorrow, my friend is the Assistant Manager. I am hoping to reserve the Captivate for myself, a longtime iPhone user. This is my first Android device and I am stoked. I am tired of having to jailbreak the iphone to make it do what I want. I love the Android development community and can't wait to enjoy everything the Android OS has to offer.

At the same time I will be buying my wife her first smartphone, iPhone 4. Couldn't convert her.

I'll be looking to get one sunday, the day it's released. However, not sure if I will get one from a store or just order online. I have a work phone with verizon(moto droid) that I am swapping over to att(since my personal phone has been with att for years and works soooo much better in the market that I am in better than verizon). So it depends if I want to goto a store or just call a rep and have it swapped over the phone...but I am definitely going to get one. just a sidenote though...lol i am not looking forward to sunday at all, my vacation is over and daughter will be leaving to go back home....bummer!! :/

Well shit, I just went by the same store I talked with the manager about the Captivate with and damned if they might not just have lost a customer.

I walked in and wanted to see if they had a Captivate on display that I could play with. I was told no, I'd have to wait until Sunday like everyone else. Ok, I can handle that part, and maybe the rudeness that it was conveyed with. When I told the salesperson that I was hoping to catch a glimpse of the phone and make a decision before Thursday because I had an appointment with a Verizon rep to buy a Droid X, she told me that I was, "out of luck." I was a little shocked by the comment and admittedly hoping that mentioning my appointment would garner a look-see.

She then said, "Hope you enjoy Verizon but we also carry the iPhone 4."

She said this to me after I had described my problems with my iPhone 3G- it's been almost useless since I upgraded to iOS4- laggy, apps quit randomly, and many re-boots. I use my phone A LOT and I've been a long time AT&T customer. Plus I had heard that some stores had a Captivate on display. It's all I was asking. But her rude comments just really pissed me off.

Guess I just didn't like her attitude and the fact that her coworker smirked when she talked. **** 'em.

Sadly most of the mgmt at AT&T seem to think that everyone wants an iPhone. I have had some of the same problems with them over the past 6 months that I have been going in nearly weekly to talk with them about what is comming. Basicly just to make sure they knew people wanted choice. And Even then when I went in on iPhone release day just to see what was up the manager tried to sell me an iPhone.
I told them has the fact every week that I have come in here asking about android and telling you that one size does not fit all mean anything to you. They just shruged and walked away.

I agree with you above- I only wanted them to know that people are interested and excited about the phone. Hell, she could have said something like, "It's awesome that you are looking forward to the phone but I unfortunately can't show it to you." Instead she was rude. AT&T is so fixated on the iPhone that they refuse to look left and right instead of straight ahead. There are THOUSANDS of people looking to experience Android. There were 2 people returning iPhone4's in the store because of the signal issue.

I want to stay with AT&T and I would like a Captivate but this lady pissed me off enough that I just might proceed with the Droid X. We'll see what happens on Thursday for me, I guess.

AT&T is like any other large company, even their brick and mortar stores. They have 2 kinds of people working for them. Really awesome, and really horrible. Nothing in between. I've decided to stay away from dealing directly with them as much as possible.

Have you tried to coerce your local Best Buy to give you a glimpse of the phone? Or maybe just go back to that AT&T store another time and try to find that one manager you talked to before.

Online. Sunday. I have no patience for the stores (for the most part) and no desire to pay a $35 restocking fee, even though there's only a small chance I'd need to return it due to buyer's remorse or switch to a different phone. It's the principal.

Is anyone else feeling hesitant about buying this so soon? I mean yes, it is ATT's best android phone to be released, but the galaxy s is going to all carriers, not making it much of an ATT exclusive. Is it possible ATT could release an exclusive, powerful phone, or do people believe the aero and streak are all they will put out this year?

Hesitant? Normally, yes, but since the major carriers are getting it there's a lot riding on Samsung wanting to do the right thing. Plus, preliminary reviews have been good.

Regarding releasing an exclusive, powerful phone - technology's like that. As soon as you believe you have the latest and greatest the sun comes up the next day and your new phone stands a good chance of being technically obsolete.

Feel like driving yourself crazy? Then worry about all the good stuff coming down the pike during the duration of your contract or...buy it outright and benefit from options.

Being rude to customers is just stupidly bad business. Whatever you came in looking for she should have hyped, and even if she was under orders to push the iPhone, being rude wasn't going to convince you to buy one.

Would it be possible for me to get the store phone number and (if possible) the name of the employee you spoke to? If no name then possibly the time you went in?

Starting to get depressed here. I've called the 2 AT&T stores (authorized retailers) w/in 20mi of my house & neither of 'em know anything about whether they'll have the Captivate Sunday. I've also called the local Best Buy... same story. They're all supposedly going to be calling me back once they have more solid info. I'm not hopeful :(

**Edit - just called the one that's an hour away from me... they're actually an AT&T corporate store, & the guy said they didn't even have theirs yet. He said they should have them on Sunday, though, & that their shipments come in more twds the end of the week. If that's the case, I guess I may have some more of a chance w/the local stores...

Worst part: the auto-answer on corporate store says, "blah-blah-blah... home of the Apple iPhone 4!"

I... I... I..... set deh bldg on fire....

Luckily I have both Sunday and Monday off of work....if I can't get it by then I'll be waiting another two weeks probably as I work at least 12 hours each day, and head off on a week long vacation starting the 25th.
Please AT&T, take my money, just don't make we wait any longer.

Try calling them on Saturday and you'll probably get a more accurate answer.
