How much longer will you keep your EVO 4G?

Saw that in the other thread. I love the concept, but I'm curious why they would put 16GB internal memory AND a micro SD slot. And why use AMOLED? It has great color, but HORRIFIC visibility in sunlight. I thought plain AMOLED was obsolete 2 years ago?

I'm also wondering WTF Sprint is thinking by numbering the Evo line as 4-3-1 (4G to 3D to Evo One). So confusing. I can just imagine...

My first Android phone was an HTC Hero and I did love it. However, I got tired of running out of hard drive space and having to remove apps to get rid of the 'Low Space' error.

I upgraded a year early to get the HTC EVO and I do really love it. But now I am running out of space on this phone (even with a bunch of my apps being on my SD card)

So I have about a year until I am eligible for another upgrade. I am hearing about another new HTC coming to Sprint (EVO One ?).

So my thinking is that I might consider upgrading early if the new HTC phone has all of the great functionality of my beloved HTC EVO and a larger hard drive. Or, I might just keep my EVO until my upgrade date...

What do you all think ?

I suggest doing what I did. Root and flash MikG 3.11. I now have about 48hrs of light-use battery life, and about 10hrs heavy usage. Also, thanks to MikG's native support for A2SD, I also have plentiful internal internal memory as a result of partitioning my 16gb class 10 micro SD card (I think I set aside 2gb). I now will have no problem making it until the Evo 2 is released.

Thanks for the suggestion MikG, but I honestly am not tech savy enough to root my phone. Trust me, if I tried, I would brick it.

I thought the same thing, I took the time to read as much rooting info as I could, and then re-read and re-read it. Finally with a little kick in the azz from my friends at AF I attempted rooting and it worked out very nicely. The guys/gals around here are always willing to lend a hand, and are pretty savvy on the whole rooting thing. From what I read online and with the info you have available in the forum it would be pretty difficult to brick your phone. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
 
Rooting is very easy if one were to get stuck or confused somewhere feel free to pm me ill help along the way

I plan on keeping my evo until lte rolls out why bother upgrading before then?

Excerpt from post I made back in January on Android Central....

....but if you got a Galaxy from Samsung, you got the top of the line. There is no such model for HTC. I would love to see an "Evo" line or Thunderbolt, etc. but one starting point for the high end "Cadillac" phone of the company. Whatever variation the carriers put on it fine but it is tip of HTC development. Motorola kind of did the same with the Atrix line on Verizon and Sprint. But HTC is all over the place. Make one solid phone with top-of-the-line hardware, quality material (like thin aluminum unibody designs), great specs, screens and processors etc. Call it HTC One (just an example) but market to all vendors as the Tmobile One, Sprint One, Verizon One...and update it once a year.....

Maybe HTC listened so you can cast an evil eye at me maybe :-)

Looks like EVO4G lovers (me included there) will get the next evolution in the HTC One.
It pretty much stays true in spirit to what the original EVO4G was but with updated internals.

Some will say the EVO3D was the successor to the 4G but I never felt that way even with the 3D turned off.
 
It's not the phones as much as the network to me. I happen to get pretty good Wimax coverage near my home and everywhere in NJ or NYC that matters to me. LTE coverage will have to be faster and better.

Sprint's probably going to have to step up the LTE though if they think an iPhone LTE is in the plans. I wouldn't get an iPhone, but I hardly see Sprint successfully roling out LTE without knowing iPhone demand will be outrageous if/when LTE is widespread and if it includes unlimited LTE. The whole success of Hesse's plan now has to include unlimited LTE for iPhone vs the other carriers tiered plans.

The thing I don't like about the new HTC superphone for Sprint is that it doesn't have a user-replaceable battery. I don't like taking that option from me as batteries do decline in performance over time. Also, it would help if the battery was lithium polymer instead of lithium ion.

Apple doesn't give a talk time that's readily available on its website. All it says is "outstanding battery life". Apple marketing :rolleyes:.

Sprint lists it as 8 Hours of talk time, which is very average.

My main issue with getting an iPhone would be the closed garden approach apple takes. Theres a reason why gaining full control of an iPhone is called JAILbreaking it.

As for lasting longer than an EVO, I'm able to easily get a full 24 hours out of my phone, and have stretched it to 3.5 DAYS before with normal use. Anything over 18 hours isn't needed because I charge my phone at night. Your first issue with battery consumption is most likely using those power managers. Using apps to control battery levels isnt recommended. Android handles itself fine. I would also look into custom ROM/kernel combinations
 
I was originally planning to wait at least 6 months after the Evo 4G LTE release to get it as I don't normally like to get brand new phones because most seem to have some kind of bugs that take a little while to resolve. I am now planning to pre-order it 7 May after all because the issues with my Evo 4G have become increasingly frustrating. Most frustrating of all is the memory issue. I've had this phone for almost 16 months now and at one point had 36 downloaded apps that cause no memory issues. Then, about 5-6 weeks ago I began getting the "low on space" message. I've got all the downloaded apps on the SD card with the exception of any that I'm running widgets for but I've still had to delete apps just to keep the memory issue under control. I currently have only 20 apps downloaded but will have to uninstall another one soon if I want to do any more updates. I've cleared my cache, uninstalled any updates on any bloatware apps I don't use, and was considering rooting my phone until I saw that the new Evo 4G LTE is going to sell for only $199. Not sure how they can sell it that cheap but with my $150 discount it's only going to cost me $50 to upgrade so it seems like a no brainer to do so.

Thats what they're selling it for with a new 2 year agreement. So if your not due for an upgrade it will be way more than that.

1- Root your phone
2- Buy a 16Gig or 32Gig Class 10 micro SD card and partition it (setting aside about 2Gigs in the partition)
3- Flash MikG3.11
4- Enjoy never seeing that "low memory" message again!

I have a 16Gig micro SD setup this way, and I have 231MB available on my phone, and 2.74Gigs available on my SD. Oh, and I have over 150 downloaded apps listed.

I'm pretty sure the $199 price only applies after you've started a plan, after you've activated a new line, or after you've used an eligible upgrade. So you're not going to see it for $50. Not before Christmas at least...

That's something I'm still not 100% clear on. During my last conversation with Sprint I was told that I was currently eligible for the $150 discount(which I already knew) and that I would be eligible for a rebate once I hit my 20th month which is an improvement over the 22nd month requirement as it used to be. Come 7 May when Pre-orders begin I will be in my 17th month and my understanding is that I can use my $150 and "sign" a new 2 year agreement and get the phone at the $199 cost. My main issue is that when I tried to get the Sprint rep to say it that way to me so I'm left unsure what my actual cost will be come 7 May. I'm hoping the phone will be added to Sprints online store prior to 7 May so I can see what my listed cost is but I'm guessing that it won't post there until the morning of the 7th.

Does that sound about right to those of you more in the know than I?

If my current phone was working without issue and my cost for the 4G LTE was $150 or more on 7 May then I'd be on board with rooting this phone until my 20th month when my full $150 discount & $150 rebate kicks or my 24 month when I'd have to renew anyway.

So are you saying you believe the cost before my $150 discount would likely be around $300? That sounds more likely than it being $50 to me but I can still embrace my wishfull thinking. ;-)
