How much on board available memory ideal?

My phone runs w/ some lag and I have no doubt it's due to memory usage. I admit I have a lot of apps on my phone since I'm still trying to decide on best apps for my use so I have a couple similar apps that will eventually be widdled down to just one of each type but in the mean time I'm wondering how much available memory is ideal to ensure fast efficient use of resources.

I am afraid to root so until my courage is up I can't get rid of the unused stock apps which take up a boat load of space ie twitter and I hate that unused apps load even though not in use but I believe in the efficiency of android so I don't use task killers.

I guess I'm wondering how many self installed on board apps I should strive to get rid of?

Are you talking memory or storage space? The OS will manage what it needs for the former. The latter doesn't matter as long as you don't run out. Keep in mind though that many apps store data/cache in their as well.

I'm talking about the memory available for processing stuff. I admit I don't know the android os architecture so I may be way off base here but I'm thinking its equivalent to window's swap file. My thought is if I fill up my device w/ software the available space for android's "swap file" would be minimized thus slowing things down on the device overall.

You know that saying "someone w/ a little bit of knowledge can be dangerous" well that's me. I started going down this path because tasker has been giving me "got low memory signal from system" warnings so I took this info and ran. Any Thoughts?
