How quickly things change

I can't complain, I paid about $80 for it at the time. The Droid would've cost me $200, and judging by what I can see of my wife's Droid I wouldn't have liked it.

It doesn't feel that much faster or smoother once I've tweaked my Eris the way I like it and it feels way too big. Hell, with the Eris it almost feels to small and light, but with the Otterbox Commuter case it feels just right.

With my Eris running CELB 3.8 Froyo I'm in no real rush to get rid of it. I'm planning on keeping it around as a house phone (google voice+wifi) even after I choose my next phone. It's been too good to me to toss it in the drawer with all my other old phones.
 
some of us still hang around the Eris forums from time to time. Myself, Caddy and even OTD still post here on occasion
 
It's been said already, but I'll second it . . . I'm sticking with the Eris at the very least until my full 2 year upgrade, so about this time next year. The various ROMs make it competitive with anything that's out now, except maybe the Nexus S with the NFC capability.

The only thing I've found that I can't do on the Eris, that I'd do if I had another phone, is play a smooth game of Angry Birds. That's it. Not worth upgrading to another phone to play a game. Plus, as noted, newer phones are friggin hueg.

There's an absolute plethora of ROMs available, especially compared to other phones. Gingerbread, while not especially stable, is bootable and being developed. I get 3 days easy on a charge with the 1750 battery now that it's been recal'd.

In short, nothing that's out right now would be an unequivocal upgrade from the Eris. Nothing. They're all either much bigger/thicker, worse battery life, older OS/fewer ROMs, some compromise. Oh, this one's much faster . . . but it gets a day on a charge. Some compromise. Not really that compelling.
 
I love lurking around and wanted to see what was new with the eris(not much i see)

I saw an Eris a few days ago and i was like "AWww, I remember when i had one of those..."

I kinda miss the slow sucker. it was a decent phone and it is amazing to me that people are still supporting it with various roms and what not.

Hopefully, they will revive the Eris name and make something along the lines of a mytouch 4g but Verizon branded....
 
... this is surprising in any way? With the quick pace of hardware and software updates, any actual phone purchase is guaranteed to be 'outdated' (a relative term) in about a year, or less. Whether that's actually important is a personal decision, depending on one's propensity/susceptibility to needing the 'latest and greatest'.

For me the Eris still fills the bill, and probably will continue to do so until it develops a hardware issue. My personal upgrade strategy is usually to purchase the last revision of the prior generation, thus guaranteeing that other's have taken the arrows in the back, which also means I'll probably be probably be 'upgrading' to an Incredible in about a year.

if verizon doesn't stop putting out phones that are bigger than 4" I swear to god I'll get an iphone.

right now the lg star is the only ray of hope in their lineup, even without samoled the dualcores are going to bring a ton of battery life improvements to the table.

Interesting, I find the radio in this phone is the best I've had since joining VZW. You have WiFi on the ERIS so why use/carry iPOD. Battery life is good if properly managed.

I'd have to agree. I've never had an issue with the radio. As for battery life, my wife and my friends all chose bigger Android phones (wife got the Droid and my friends have the Incredible and DroidX) and their phones are usually giving dead before the end of the day while I've got about 35% left on days with a good amount of use.

On days where I use it as a normal phone, calls and texts, I can get a good day and a half to two days out of it.

Other than size, that's what bugs me most. The Eris is supposed to have such bad battery life, yet everyone of their phones that I'm considering jumping to eventually is dying faster than mine.

I'll see whats out there in 10 months when I can get my full upgrade

Well, I know what's best for me, but what I have found is that the Touch has a better WiFi radio - it connects at a greater range, the radio supports 802.11n. It's so thin that it's barely noticeable, its display is higher resolution than the Eris, Safari is faster than any browser on the Eris over WiFi, and the battery lasts for days rather than a day. By using the Touch for mobile browsing I save some Eris battery life - so that is one way that I properly manage battery life on the Eris.

And, of course, the Touch is miles better as a music and video player than the Eris is. I definitely did not get the Eris to be a music player.

I also know several people with Incredibles, Droids, and a few Blackberrys, and they all get slightly better WiFi and cellular radio reception than the Eris does at marginal signal strength locations, and definitely the Droid's battery lasts longer than the Eris or Incredible (which is something verified by Consumer Reports, by the way, in tests of these devices.)
 
Clarification. When I refer to radio I mean the phone radio only. WiFi is a separate issue alltogether.

Furthermore, since this a phone first and foremost, then for me the most important item is how well the phone works.

YMMV.....:)
 
I've switched back to XTR recently and its like having a completely new phone compared to froyo. if you keep your widget usage down and use a quick launcher like LP then it should be damn near as snappy as anything else.

Sorry to get somewhat off topic, but how's the battery life on xtrsense compared to CELB Froyo?

In my experience, all else being equal, xtrSENSE lasts about 10% to 25% less. I get about 20-24 hours from xtrSENSE, about 28-30 hours from CELB.

I did try installing Conap's CFS kernel on xtrSENSE and that seemed to make battery life better, but I had a few periods where the phone was super-laggy so I went back to Zanfur's kernel (the default in xtrSENSE). What I did not try was running CFS and setting the default governor to ondemand rather than smartass - that may be better. It would be worth a test, if you're interested in trying it out.

Yeah, I plan on testing a few throughout the week, this and the Sense-Froyo ROMs most likely. We've got like zero testing to do at work due to weather restrictions and it's not looking any better through the rest of the week.

Figure I might as well do some testing with my phone at work then.

That's what I'd like to see. I signed up for the "new in two" or whatever the hell it's called, so I'm not due for an upgrade until August. I hope by then someone (preferably HTC - I like their phones) comes up with a phone with the size and finish of the Eris. The new phones perform so much better (I like the Incredible), but they all seem so clunky compared to the Eris.
