Root how safe is wifi tethering?

I did a search on this forum along with others but didn't find anything too specific. I am currently using crunchbang linux dual boot with windows 7. I was wondering how safe is it to use wifi tethering. I have it password protected but I wasn't sure if that was enough. I know these phones dont have a fire wall. I have juice defender on the phone but thats about it(because this phone has been getting really laggy with too many apps)

Is there a way to make it more secure if it isn't? I am very network illiterate so if you could please explain. I was looking at setting up a VPN but I have never tried to do that. Thanks in advance. Oh and I'm a new user and thanks for all the help while I was a Lurker :D

For the lag with the apps, try rooting your esteem and then deleting the bloatware or try LG esteem optimizer on the market (Seems to be very very helpful)

As for the computer, Im a little confused on what you are asking. The title concerns tethering (presumably off the cell phone) and then you ask about VPN settings so I'm ust trying to figure out what it is that you are asking. Do you want to tether your cellular internet to your computer? Or connect your computer to the mobile network?
