How safe is Z4root now that it's gone from The Market

I want to root my phone but I have been holding back for two reasons:

1. z4root is no longer available at The Market

2. In researching the XDA Developer site I have found that the z4root developer has been MIA for over a month now.

I just wondered how safe it is to install this from a non market source when there doesn't appear to be any current support and it is such an invasive type application.

Are there any other apps like z4root that someone can recommend that are easy to use and dependable?

I grabbed it before it was removed from the market. I believe Google made him remove it because of manufacturer pressure. I don't know what happened to Ryan, I thought I'd read somewhere something about an illness, not him, but a family member - but I'm not sure.

His One Click Lag Fix rooting method is what I used to root my Captivate originally, it worked flawlessly. I wouldn't worry about it - there are plenty there to offer support if anything goes wrong. I don't know if the two programs used the same methods or not, I just grabbed it so I'd have it.

There are other ways to root the Captivate, see the CapFAQ in my signature, or wander on over to XDA and use One Click Root & Unroot.

As for apps that are on the Market and those not on the Market - neither go through any validation process so if you do not trust the dev do not install.

On the other hand each app shows permissions needed for it every time you install it - from Market or not.

If there is an app that thousands of people use I would not worry about its security.

Thanks so much to all who replied to my question.

I took your advice and my phone is now rooted. It was a rather extensive process for me, being such a noob, but I got it done with the help of someone more knowledgeable.

The entire process is in a sort of "Tutorial" at the Huawei Ascend Forum for anyone wanting to root that doesn't know how.

It's very detailed...over 100 posts on it...step by step, troubleshooting etc.
