Help How secure is the internet connection??

I just got my sprint optimus s phone and I'm using a wifi hotspot signal from the quick settings app. download to run my home desktop internet. I'm very happy with it and the speed works just fine for me, but how secure of a connection is it that I'm using? Can I use this wifi signal from my phone to pay bills online and purchase things off of the internet? Do I need to put any type of security on the connection and if so how do I do that? Thanks for all the help so far you guys are great and within a couple of days of getting my phone I'm using it for my home internet, awesome!!!

The security you need for paying bills and what not is not built into the network connection but rather the browser and the webserver. Essentially, if it is secure over a regular network, it should be secure from the phone. Essentially web browsers and servers use SSL for secure communications. They essentially provide a public key that your browser uses to encrypt the data you send the server; the server then uses a private key to decrypt the data you sent it. If that doesn't make sense, don't worry, as long as it is implemented securely, it is very secure.

Provided your computer is secure, you could leave your network wide open and your transactions would be secure. The problem of course is that your computer may not be secure; so it is probably best to lock the wifi down :).

How do I secure it in the settings, and how do I set a password? Also on a side note can I get into trouble for using my phone to run my internet at home?

If you've already downloaded quicksettings, open it and then tap on "wifi hotspot" to turn on. At the top of your phone you will see the blue icon indicating that the wifi hotspot is on. Drag down on that and you will see a window that says "Hotspot active...touch to configure." A new window will open; tap on "Portable wifi hotspot settings," then tap on "configure wifi hotspot." That will open the window that will allow you to name your connection and assign it a password. When you are done, tap on "Save." Hope that helps! :)

I have quick settings and the hotspot on but my problem is trying to get a secure connection between the phone and desktop, I put in a password but when I attempt to connect to the secured link it wont, I have tried everything I can think of.......help
