How to avoid 3G roaming fees while using WIFI internationally?

I'm traveling to Aruba on monday and I have a Droid on Verizon.

I want to bring my phone so that I can use it with my hotel's WIFI, but I want to make sure I avoid any steep roaming charges for 3G data. Is there a mode I can put my phone on so that it will only use WIFI and not try to connect to Verizons stuff?

Will WIFI work in airplane mode?

EDIT: oops I just found the "Data roaming" setting and it is unchecked, so I think I am good to go.

Yep, unchecking Data Roaming means you're good to go.

WiFi works just fine in Airplane Mode on my Droid.

the trick:
goto in airplane mode 1st then enable wifi..

if wifi connected then airplane mode it shuts it off.
