Help how to block a number?

Hey everyone. I've been looking everywhere online but.can't seem to find any answers. Does anyone know how to block a specific number from calling? Is there anyway to do it internally without having to download an app? thanks in advance!

I think you'd have to contact Sprint to specifically block a number from calling you. However, a nice feature in the People app is to send calls from a contact straight to voicemail. I've tried it and it's wicked cool; the phone never rings.

Or just give out ur Google Voice number and block it there. But like the other poster said, if you have the number saved in ur contacts, you can open the "People" app, then select the person's number; then press "Menu", then "Edit", scroll down to the bottom, there's a "Send directly to voicemail" option built in.

Thanks....I knew about the "straight to voicemail" option...and that's what I ended up using...but I still think it would be nice to completely block certain numbers from reaching you at all. Sprint couldn't do it...they said that other companies do, but they do not. Bummer. Thanks again for your help.

If you get YouMail, there is an option to "ditch" a call. they call, but don't even get voicemail, if you don't answer, then it just hangs up (I think). it's kind of handy. I have a combination of YouMail and GV, it works for me.

Another thread on this forum points out apps like aFirewall (which is basically the same thing as adding the numbers you don't want to People and then choosing the option to send them directly to voicemail...just a shortcut app to make it easier). There are other apps, but some appear to require rooting your phone.

I know you're trying to avoid downloading an app but if you decide you're willing to do that there's an app call "call filter". It gives you the option for the call to automatically go to vm when it comes in or for your phone to automatically hang up the call. You can also block all numbers starting with "xxx" (1-800 for example) or any numbers not in your phone book. The app is really nice bec it gives you options.

For those of you using android 2.1 (others may work I just happen to have this version on my Samsung Captivate) go to settings -> call settings -> all calls -> auto reject. Enable auto reject then click auto reject list. Here you can enter the number manually by going to the menu or you can select from contacts or call log. We don't have those settings on the Hero

How does auto reject in 2.1 work? It blocks it by picking up, then hanging up?

I found this thread as I'm getting nuisance calls from someone who rings once and hangs up. I think the idea is to get me to call back, at premium rates..?

Anyway, while reading I found this seems to work (Gingerbread 2.2)

Go to 'Call History' (it's an app/icon in the main app folder)

Find the offending caller

Press and hold the number (Android's version of a right-click)

From the resulting menu, just select 'Block caller'.

You get a confirmation message that it will just go straight to voicemail, confirm yes.

Done :D

Android 2.2 is FroYo and Android 2.3 is Gingerbread. Is this trick for stock Android or HTC Sense?

I will have to give it a shot later. Thanks for the tip.

Oh, 2.3 then :)

Erm.. dunno if it's stock or not but yes, I do have the HTC Sense thingy.

If I hold down on a call history entry I get a complete menu, detailed call history, edit number, send text, delete from call history, save to 'people', block caller and copy number.

If that's all down to HTC then that's quite impressive.

I just tried in on a stock Android 2.1 with HTC Sense ROM and no go. I guess it only works for newer version of HTC Sense.

It is still a useful tip for people with newer handsets or that have a ROM with a newer version of HTC Sense. Thanks for posting it.

I installed a free app called Call Filter on my Droid 3, and it's working well. Easy to blacklist incoming calls--telemarketers may call me once, but that's it!

I've got a Nexus S running 2.3.6, and none of the options listed above are available to "reject" or blacklist a number. Also, since i am in Canada, I can't use Google Voice. :-(

Great bit of advice this (mine's 2.2).

I added the caller to my contacts as "SPAM Icon Communications" and edited the contact to send straight to voicemail.

I don't have voicemail enabled, so hopefully that should cause the caller a bit of a headache. Maybe even remove me from the database.

Incidentally this particular number was +420239011111

Will take the same approach with any others I might get.

Incidentally I have Go SMS and its message blacklist function is fantastic as I was frequently getting spam SMS from different +447 numbers, all with the same text. I never see them now although I do periodically check that nothing genuine is in there.
