How to change my desire's boot screen?

Hi Sookster,

I've had a quick look through the Root Directory ... I can find \System\Media, but \Data\ does not contain \local\.

N00b question, what file(s) should this bootanimation.zip contain? Simply the image that is to be displayed? Or does it need other "androidy" type files?

Trying desperately to get rid of my horrid "Telstra Next G" splash ;)

Thanks in advance,
Dave.

Its definitely in Data/Local.

I use root Explorer to add my files as makes things a lot easier.

There are some nice Boot animations here that you can just drop into the above folder and overwrite your current one.

Also here you can change your battery icon, notification bar, icons within it, notification blind and the boot animation. Always adding new things so good to keep an eye on this :D

UOT Kitchen

You need to copy your framework.res to your desktop and this is located in system/framework. Keep your old one just incase you want to change back but pick all the changes that you want to make. add your framwork.res file and then want for it to modify it. Then go into recovery and install zip.

Just a quick thought, the first screen that appears is the splash screen and then the 2nd one is the bootscreen. The second one is normally the one with the green htc writing and quietly brilliant.

Is it the bootscreen you want to change or the splash?

Fantastic, cheers for the info.

Last n00b question for the moment - will this replace the original branded splash also? Or simply the boot screen which normally displays the "HTC - Quietly Brilliant" etc etc?

The boot screen isn't too bad, but the splash.must.go! Haha :D

The links above will only change the bootanimation not the splash. I have attached some links below that tell you how to change the splash. There are some good bootanimations in the links above so give them a go as makes your phone just that little bit more personal :)

Right the splash screen is nowhere near as easy as the boot screen. Not tried it myself yet as looks like it might take a bit of time.

Here's a link that should explain it all.

[HOW TO] HTC Desire Custom Splash screen - xda-developers

Make sure you read it all and not sure but think you might need S-OFF to do this. Thread below that explains all about this.

[AlphaRev] Public release S-OFF HTC Desire GSM - xda-developers

Looks like I have my first bit of homework since leaving school 7 years ago ;)

Haha.

Thanks for the links, appreciate it!

Good luck and post back how you get on!

Don't quote me on the S-OFF part but if you do need it then the link is there :D

Yeah you need to flash S-OFF to change the splash, I'm avoiding the use of S-OFF myself, I'm on CyanogenMod6 nightly and I took the original HTC quietly brilliant boot from my stock ROM and put it in there, there's not that many boot screens I like out there other than the standard reflective "android" logo like the LG Shine has. I used a few but they lag like hell.

Yeah I've not bothered with S-OFF yet as it does look a little risky and for me I would not gain a great deal.

There are some good bootscreens on the UOT Kitchen Link. Currently using the Pulse one at the bottom and works a treat with no lag :D

Figured I'd share the love of my new splash screen with my fellow desire comrades. I've got the PB99IMG.zip file just not sure how to share it with out opening up a file hosting account (seems like a lot for just one file) anyone know of a site that you can upload android splash screens to then i can post the link here?

Edit: added PB99IMG.zip to XDA Here

Here's a preview (suggestions or tweaks welcomed)

Added this one aswell, in the same above XDA thread.

I have some images I need to turn into a bootanimation. Ive made them successfully before and even with this iset of images yesterday. I didnt like the look though, so recreated and for the life of me cannot get them to work anymore.

I have loads of 24bit JPEGS I need to convert into PNG's. What tool is everyone else using to get working images? and what are the exact required specs? Ive used so many apps recently, I cannot remember which of the ones I used worked.

Currently it just gives blank / black screen

GiMP for Win/Linux can convert JPG to PNG images. Not sure about animating it though.

I've got loads of things that convert to png but there must be a specific criteria. Have you successfully used it to create a boot animation?

For adding a new one to a ROM it has to have been written in the kitchen to allow a new bootanimation.zip to be in /data/local but it also depends on the ROM. MIUI has the boot animation file in the /system/media folder but you can add your own in /data/local if you want to

As for making your own I had a guide somewhere so trying to find it

I've made my own before successfully but facing issues getting the pngs to work. Just plays black

Can't believe it was just staring me in my face. It's 32 bit png. Just open in ms paint and save. Png default is 32 bit.

Grrrr
