Help How to check for software updates?

Hello I just got this phone after having problems with the Samsung Galaxy Ace.

I've had to do some app updates already and wondering if the phone software is up-to-date itself.
How would I check this?
Do I need to download some software from HTC themselves onto my PC to update the phone?

From the home screen, hit the menu (hardware) button then,
Settings > About phone > System software updates > Check now
