How to clear unknown messages

The Mail Icon on my main screen shows that I have two messages. However, I checked and there are none.
How do I clear this false indication?

I believe that I found the explanation - strange as it seems. The email account on the phone is linked to one on my desktop. Even though I had picked up the messages on the desktop, the phone didn't know this until I went to the phone's list of messages and separately deleted them there as well. I consider this a bug.

Is your mail app set up as POP or IMAP? IMAP will sync POP will not. For that matter your PC email client will need to be IMAP too.

My mail app is set up as POP. That explains the discrepancy.
