Root How to disable ICS OTA update & notifications?

My wife's Bionic (stock 2.3.4 ROM) started receiving the OTA update notification for ICS last week and I told her to just keep choosing "Later" until I could figure out how to disable the update and any future notifications.

From what I understand, I need to root the phone (done), and then use Titanium Backup Pro to freeze the updater app. Also, since she's getting the update notification, that supposedly means the update has already downloaded to her phone and resides in a cache somewhere. So I'll also need to clear the update from the cache.

In searching for exact instructions on how to do this, I've come across a lot of contradictory information. My questions are as follows:

1) Exactly which updater app(s) do I need to freeze?

2) What's the best method for clearing the already-downloaded update from the cache? It looks like I have several options here: use the Clear Cache function from the stock Recovery screen; or use something like Root Explorer to manually delete the cached update file.

Any advice will be much appreciated. I'd hate to brick her phone & end up in the doghouse.

thanks,
JohnB

Thanks. I didn't come across your post in my Google searches.

Renaming those 2 files with a .bak extension is certainly an easy fix; no need for a special app to "freeze" anything.

Now what about deleting the cached update file that was downloaded to the phone? I've read that you'll continue to get the update nag until you get rid of that file.

thanks again,
JohnB

I'll be honest with you, I don't know what cache it would be in. I never had that scenario where the update was already downloaded.

There's two ways I know of clearing a cache. One is through the stock recovery and the other is through the bionic bootstrap app.

I personally like the bootstrap app because I occasionally wipe the dalvik cache and the regular cache.

Alright, I did some digging on Google and found this.

Where can I find the OTA update file? - Android Enthusiasts

It would appear you can just clear the cache in stock recovery. :)

Thanks again. Actually, I haven't done anything about cleaning out the cached update file (wherever it may reside). It's been 3 days, and so far I haven't received any more OTA update nags - so I think I might be outta the woods. If it ain't broke, don't fix it?

Thanks again for your help with this.

I have a Sprint Epic 4G Touch on GB 2.3.6 so this might not work on a Motorola phone. I kept getting the notification that the ICS update was ready to install. I didn't want it because I've read that Sprint messed it up and it causes many problems with the phone. I wanted to disable the popup notification.

You can try this...it worked for me. Very simple to do, no rooting required, won't hurt if it doesn't work.

This is what you can try. Next time the notification pops up, click on "More Info", then pull your battery for a few minutes. Put it back in and start up the phone. Hopefully the popup notifications will stop popping up.
