Help how to disable 'maps'?

got a poor battery to start with, rooted and on a battery efficient rom, but still poor really. i notice that maps has 2 entries in the 'running services' and shows up as a percentage in my battery use, so i want to stop it. if i try and close from running services, it opens itself immediately again.
ive got gps off. ive got a trraffic widget on my homescreen but is in zzzz mode and hasnt been used in days.

any ideas?

thanks

Are you using any location-aware widgets, weather maybe? It could be that they use Maps to get their location fix.
The traffic widget might be aquiring a location fix periodically even though it's not actually in use. Try removing it.

thanks, im certainly not using anything that im aware of, including weather or location. but yes, ill try removing the traffic widget and see if that works. i just sort of assumed that the widgets were more or less like a desktop shortcut on a pc and served no purpose other than to give you direct access to something rather than go through the applications screen.

thanks a lot

I'm not sure if it'll change anything if you're not using a weather widget, but you could turn off the sync under Settings -> Accounts & Sync, just in case.

Widgets are programs that run at startup of the phone. Some will consume very little battery - if they don't sync data, they just sit in memory not doing anything. Some will sync at some frequency or other and use battery doing so.

The analogue of the PC desktop shortcut is dropping an application icon onto your homescreen. There are also Shortcuts, but these are normally to a specific aspect of an application (like Gmail, Account x, Inbox).

You could stop it at startup with autostarts. Usually though I find maps sometimes runs after it has been used and a reboot usually cures it for me.

thanks, for what its worth ive got all syncs turned off too. i looked in the running services and there were 3 maps processes running. maps, location and traffic widget. i couldnt close them without them starting straight away so then i went into 'manage applications' and close it from there. this has stopped it from running now and theres no maps processes running. so looks like thats the way to do it unless anyone knows better?

suroot, how do i find autostarts?

thanks

hmmm thought id sorted it but every now and then ill check running services and maps is open again :-/ so i go to manage applications and force close it. it doesnt come straight back, but it does come vback eventually.

i looked up that 'autostarts' and it looks like itd do the job, but the problem is.....the price believe it or not. 61p :-) now i dont mind paying that at all, and id certainly buy more apps if it just wasnt for the fact that im going to have to put all my credit card details into google checkout to link it. i dont trust the internets security, but id gladly pay by paypal. i may be being misguided here, but i look at it as tho im putting all my details out there just for 61p.

any thoughts on that? i assume theres no easier way of buying apps yet?

thanks

There were rumours last year of Google checkout adding Paypal to it's accepted payment methods, but nothing seems to have materialized as yet. Probably never will.

There is an alternative app in Google Play, titled "Autorun Manager" by MobiWIA - AndRS Studio. It's free and helps manage which apps you would like to have as startup apps and which you need to disable at startup. Why pay when this is all you want and it's available free?

Hope it helps :)

Out of interest, how long is your battery lasting and how much are you using the phone, My Desire started to drain the battery a lot recently, continually drawing around 100 to 200 ma (you can download an app to monitor and log it.) I put mine down to getting damp in all the rain we had. It was in my jacket pocket during a downpour. Problem went away just over a week later (the phone never got water on it directly)

Not saying your issue is the same. Just after a bit more info.
