How to disallow Google to get location data?

Now that it is becoming widely known that Google is keeping data on our locations ( that could be given to government entities like law enforcement), what, if anything can be done to the phones to disallow this?

I believe it's come out at this point that google has specifically made it so the location data they track from you is no way actually connected to YOU. There's no way to trace it from the information they have to you.

Could they be lying? Sure. But if they were going to lie about tracking your data, I'm sure they have many, many other ways to find out where you are and not tell you if they wanted.

By the by, there IS, somewhere in the location settings, an option you can uncheck to stop google from collecting data from you. I mean, there's a freaking checkbox for it. Do they really seem all that sinister to you? Seems pretty legit to me.

There is a free app in the market for rooted phones that displays your location cache info (in text or on a map) and also has an option to block the cache. At least this prevent the data from being stored on you phone. Personally, I am not overly concerned about the tracking

in location and security > uncheck use wireless networks, then check it again and it will prompt you with the collection data mumbo jumbo...you can disagree to it but then it keeps that setting unchecked...

Thanks. I did that and noticed that Use GPS satellites was unchecked. So I rechecked that and all seems to be okay.

This is getting much more press than it deserves. This location information had always been collected by phone and credit card companies; it's nothing new and won't impact your life in any way. While you can disable the collection on smart phones, you'll also be disabling any app that requires it (maps, foursquare, weather, etc) which nearly eliminates the "smart" aspect.

I thought the setting came up when you turned on you're device for the first time, or if you had done a factory reset after installing a rom.

When its at the screen where you sign into your gmail account, one of the next screens has two boxes to check and one of them says "allow anonymous collection of your location" or something like that. Pretty sure thats the option you want to turn off???

Anyone confirm?
