I have many Smartphones, that I buy direct from Hong Kong unlocked and unbranded (no carrier logo) and use on one of my AT&T lines.
Many of these phones I find on gsmarena.com and they are not meant for the USA, yet I still buy and enjoy them.
Each of the active lines I have, has the unlimited data plan from years ago. Here's the procedure I use to avoid problems.
IMPORTANT: BEFORE I even switch the Sim, and turn the phone on, (which logs it onto to cellular system) I simply call AT&T tech support (not customer support).
I explain I'm switching to a backup smartphone, that I have saved in case something happened to my primary phone.
I give them the unique identifier IMEI (or whatever that mfg calls it) and they make a manual change right there on the spot.
They are always very happy I called, especially since I volunteer the info they need, so no questions are asked. It's fast for both of us.
I've done this about three or four times per month, for years. Not once have I had a problem.
If you use this, there is no way you will have to change plans, no matter what your current situation is.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
