Well looks like the install apk from SD (with root) is not possible. I have not tried this myself, so please post if it does work. You can find the post and files needed here: Possible to edit PackagInstaller.odex file?

It's possible, actually, once you have root. I have done it and it works beautifully. All you have to do is flash the update file that j_r0dd created and posted in this thread: [MOD] Install non-market apps . The checkbox won't stay checked for some reason, but rest assured that it does actually work.
