How to find safe apps

Okay. I read the sticky on permissions and then started looking for a few apps I need.

I'd like a flashlight; bar code scanner and a metronome.

After searching the Samsung apps and the Google apps, all the ones I see have crazy permissions. Why does a flashlight need access to my contacts and other information? It doesn't.

So where do people find apps that aren't phishing or scamming or otherwise trying to obtain my info? None of the ones I saw on Google or Samsung sites had reasonable permissions for what they did.

Personally I only download from the Play Store and Amazon Store.

When I find apps that look like what I need I look at the overall rating (it better average more than 4 out of 5) and read a handful of comments - both good and bad.

Then I keep an eye on permissions during the install process and only finish the install if I like what I read.

Not a closed garden where your sins are sanitized for you like the apple store, but at least you learn to think for yourself.

(and kudos to you for reading the permissions and thinking about them)

I use TeslaLED as my flashlight - many functions, no dodgy permissions and the Play Store description explains why it has those it has (needed for app to function).

I use Tesla too. Its from a respected dev' who uses these forums. Say no more :)
Google Shopper is an excellent barcode scanner (and more) and you cant really go wrong with Google
