[How-To] Force the Official Android 2.2 Froyo Update for the Motrola Droid (FRG01B | Update 1 of 2)

Took the plunge and updated the phone hoping there were no problems....the plunge worked out well. So far, no issues. Took about 30+ seconds for it to reboot. Got the
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command notice and it went right by it.

Thanks for the links. My only issue so far is how they screwed up the text messaging stock app by adding pictures into every line. Also, white background not so good

Hey Johnlgalt, do you know if there been any reported issues with the 2.2 FRG22 Odexed From Peter Alfonso site??

Thank you in advance!!! :)

I was about to try Peter's file you mentioned. Did you have probalems with it? If so, what happened?

Did you do FRG01b or FRG22? If 22, where did you get it from?

i did see those... i tried downloading the FRG22 odexed from peter alfonso... i renamed the file update.zip and it still didn't work... or is there a different way to do that one?

It should work the same way as Trident outlined above. however, if the first one did not work for you, then the second probably won't either. It means there is something on your phone inherently blocking the install.

I'd next suggest that you get cracking on the How to revert back to Stock 2.0, 2.0.1, or 2.1 section of http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/136508-guide-all-things-root-related.html and get your phone set up with a completely stock 2.1 SBF so you can then apply the update.

Got the update...now my camera icon is gone and it says it can't open the app....also...how do I get Flash?

See http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid/106331-so-where-can-i-get-official-flash-player.html

Hi, does anybody have the Verizon stock file? I saw that it was posted before the link is not available anymore...

Thanks!

See the link I posted in the first response above - and also see that exact section I mention.

Nope, because I used it myself to update Pete's BB to FRG22, and ran it for a day or so. And I ahve not heard anyone else having issues either.

Just to be sure, though, I ran the Deodexed version b/c I like keeping my root (and numerous apps I have need it).

Quick update on my experience with this forced FRG01b upgrade to Froyo. When I first did the upgrade I posed (on pg 12) that it seemed slower and was lagging than my stock 2.1u1 (basically I was getting the typical it takes 10-30 seconds for any action to take place sort of thing.) I don't know if it was my impatience and frustration in dealing with it or what but it seemed like it was getting worse the longer it went on (or maybe I was just getting more and more pissed.) Anyway, I was getting desperately disappointed and was about to take some drastic measures on a phone I plan on returning in a week or two but after seemingly every stock sbf file download that anyone has posted for past 2.0 or 2.1 versions seem to be unavailable for download along with not being able to get sbf_flash to work correctly (and yes I did search the forums, both this and others for more than 20 hours over the last 3 days) and not wanting to post the annoying types of posts that this thread is getting so full of I thought I would just try a quick hard reset. The hard reset seemingly worked magic as now the phone is faster than ever and works great in every respect. I personally am coming from winmo to android and so far I must say that I am a little disappointed that is isn't eaiser to go back to 2.1 or even 2.0.1. Yes I know there are instructions out there for it as I have read them all multiple times (more than 20 hours of searching forums over the last 3 days) but most of the download links seem to be dead and half the facilitating programs don't work properly. I know I'm a newb to the droid and android in general, but I do have a lot experience with linux and flashing roms this just seems more painful than it has to be (sorry for venting it has just been a frustrating 3 days and I do realize that it was my decision to force the update, just thought it would be eaiser to go back for someone with at least some technical skills) regardless I'm glad it is working well now.

DasMuse - what error, if any, or you getting? I keep getting Signature verification failed, which supposedly means the zip file didn't d/l correctly or something like that. I tried Pete's and another one and both got the same error. I forced 01b last week and it worked fine.

I am also getting the signature error you mentioned. I have tried to DL it 3 times twice on the computer and once on the droid itself. Each one gives the same error. I attempted to rename it once and failed. I tried to force it as it is named and no avail either.

Figured so many other people got it to work I must be doing something wrong.

Yeah, "so many other people got it to work". Funny how we can't get ONE SINGLE ONE OF THEM to talk to us?

Interesting how an update comes out days after the 1st 2.2 and it's 30m larger, doesn't sound right to me. They added 30% more code in just a few days?

What system are you on now? What are you trying to go to FRG22 from?

Glad you got it working.

For future reference, the http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/136508-guide-all-things-root-related.html has all you need. The once dead Motorola Driver link(s) can be replaced with a simple search, or by going to Motorla's website, clicking on personal, changing the phone to the DROID from the Droid X, and then looking to the far right, and hitting the owner support button - or, to make it easier, by using this link: USB and PC Charging Drivers - Motorola, Inc. USA

Hold tight - it may be b/c even though you think you're stock, something at some time was changed. I received a new notification today and this time it seems to be a full ROM, and one that may not, in fact, require any pre-requsite ROM to be installed before it works.

It is for FRG01B, but still.... - it will help move things along a bit.

That update is actually a full ROM - the previous update required you to have ESE81 (aka 2.1 Stock), but this one doesn't seem to have any pre-requisites at all. Furthermore, I examined the files, and it seems that this has the entire set of system files, making it a full ROM. Finally, the script does not do any sort of patching as the previous one does - this does a simple format of \System on your phone and then copies the entire contents of the \system dir in the ZIP to your phone.

This one is a better version of FRG01B, and I think that it is the one that is meant to go out to *all* DROID owners.

Ok, it's a full ROM. how do we install it? Why are we getting the sig verification failed from 2 different sources?

What does this mean?

Better yet, how do we go to stock non-rooted FRG22?

The one I am referring to there is the one I just got a notification on today - as of 6:20 PM EDT this evening - about 6 hours ago.

This is a different file than the one at the beginning of this sticky, and I am about to test it *myself* and verify that it works.

By using RSDLite and going back to 2.0. Flashing, testing. Then going back to 2.0.1, Flashing, then testing. Finally going back to 2.1. Flashing and testing.

I should hopefully have results within a couple of hours. Provided I don't b0rk my phone. lol.

Ok So in order to keep sanity can you please post a reply here with the correct link for the NON Rooted FRG22 version so I can simply delete the rest I have been working with. (that have not been working with me that is! LOL) If I understand your reply to us, it is a full update that should not have any requirements. So if that is the case why will it not load over my recent upgrade to FRG01B.

Also why are we interested in the FRG22 now anyways, I forgot!

And BTW I for one really do appreciate all your time and efforts to help new users with your knowledge. It makes me look way cool at work when 3 of my coworkers dont have 2.2 but I do. And it is all because of the time you put into this group.

As for the other guy saying NOT ONE will talk to us.. He must not have read the posts you answered for him! If you are going to complain at least READ first so you dont look like the spoiled brat in the end!

At the sake of not getting into petty bickering, if YOU had read what I said it was "not one of the people who said they upgraded to FRG22 successfully are talking to us". JohnGalt said he'd been running 2.2 from being rooted for a while, so he wasn't one who'd successfully done what we're trying to do - upgrade to frg22 non-rooted, So, he wasn't who I was referring to.

JohnGalt - I do truly appreciate your efforts at trying to assist us and any further assistance you provide is greatly appreciated.

The official FRG22 has not been released - the leaked one is hte one you are looking at. However, I have a new FRH01B file that works on all pre-2.2 OSs - 2.0, 2.01 *and* 2.1 - rooted or not.

See my post here: http://androidforums.com/all-things...d-smoked-glass-got-new-notifcation-today.html

I'm stuck--my phone doesn't do anything when I press up volume and camera buttons. Thoughts? Thanks!

You are in Recovery, looking at a big old fat exclamation point, right?

I have a better working solution for all who have had issues trying ot get 2.2 stock (nonrooted) on their phones.

While this is the same build as the one leaked earlier this week, this one is different in that you don't have to have any particular version on your phone - if you have anything that is pre-2.2 (Anything Eclair-based - IOW, 2.0 or 2.0.1 or 2.1) then you can upgrade to this virgin 2.2 FRG01B ROM - correctly, this time.

this just gets more and more confusing. you upgraded to FRG22 deodexed, a rooted frg22, and got a notification from VZ to overlay and install a new FRG01B? Then you say you must have 2.0, 2.0.1, or 2.1 to do what you did? But you said you were on FRG22 deodexed. Aren't these conflicting statements?

Since this one, the full overlay, is so big, coincedentally so are the FRG22 files, maybe the FRG22 files are some complete overlay as well.

BTW - I, too, am on the FRG01b a lot of people installed last week, the one at the top of this sticky. I'm not on 2.1 or below, and just want to get to FRG22 without rooting if possible.

According to tech support at a Corporate Store there is no FRG22 coming anytime soon. They are pushing FRG01B and not doing any patches to it. My Sister's Droid got FRG01B last night. Now tech support might not be telling me everything and that is fine too but I thought I would pass this on.

Droid version, baseband, kernel, build?

No, I'm not being confusing. My phone has a ROM (http://androidforums.com/roms-droid...s-charity-themed-rom-frg22-version-6-0-a.html) that is based upon FRG22, and previously, I had installed FRG22 Deodexed.

The update that I got OTA lat night was for FRG01B. In addition, in order to install it, you cannot already ahve 2.2 on your phone.

I simply made a backup, then used RSDLite to flash the original 2.0 onto my phone, then ran the OTA update to make sure that it would install over 2.0 directly. After that tested out fine, I flashed SPrecovery onto my phone, reflashed the FRG22 Deodexed, then installed ROM Manager and restored my Smoked Glass backup.

If you want to get to FRG22, use the first part of http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/141116-guide-rooting-2-2-windows-linux.html to get the SPRecovery flashed onto your phone. When you get to step 18, go to Peter Alfonso and download the FRG22 (Odexed) file, copy it to you SDCard (not into any directory), rename it update.zip, then reboot into recovery and go to Install --> Press and select Allow update.zip --> Press and select Install update.zip.

Once it finishes updating, reboot your phone and wait for FRG22 magic to begin.

You'll then be on a unrooted FRG22.

Entirely possible, which may be why we started seeing the all in one update.

Droid version, baseband, kernel, build?

Android Version - 2.2
Baseband version - C_01.43.01P
Kernel Version - (sorry, cannot remember and I have already reverted to Smoked Glass, using a non standard kernel - anyone help me out here?)
Build Number - FRG22

Same here on all accounts.

I'm coming away with the idea that those of us n00bs who forced Trident's unrooted update of FRG01B last week and want to get to FRG22 unrooted are in a bad way.

johngalt

It looks like this is a back and forth of just missing important info causing a confusing dialogue.

Sounds like when rqballjh asked if he needed a rom manager a response was not met.

it sounds like you do need one to get to FRG22, is that correct?

i think what he and i are both looking for is a file to download we just have to rename update.zip and force the update as this thread started, without a rom manager

Does that exist for simplicity's sake?

Thanks, and I apologize if I am misinterpreting the conversation

Chances are that Verizon and Motorola will push two different updates. One that will patch the bad FRG01b (possibly FRG22). That update would probably detect the current Android version and know immediately if it needed to be downloaded and installed.

The other update would be the new FRG01b that would wipe /system and install fresh. That would take care of everyone who didn't already have FRG01b installed.

Of course, they could be pushing FRG01b that has a slightly different version name (update-1?) that would wipe /system and be installed on all phones regardless of current version.

I'm not a Verizon or Motorola employee, so I don't know for sure. This is just the most logical thing that I can think of.
