Root [HOW TO](gaining root)unlock, downgrade, and achieve s-off with htcDev

I'm up and running now, and the downgrade fixed my unknown wireless issue. Thanks for the excellent tutorial.

Since the steps involve downgrading, the system constantly suggests performing an update. If I want to test drive stock, would I need to follow some of the original steps to keep root and such after an upgrade? Or would I be better off ignoring the prompt and going with a custom ROM?

awsome! glad the drivers fixed your bootloader RUU issue, and everythings worked out.if you want to try stock, you can reinstall the stock recovery, and then let the phone OTA. or you can run a newer RUU and let the phone OTA. assuming yovue completed all the steps and are s-off, stuff is easy from now on. :)

if you want to go the completely stock route, you can re-root easily by:
1)install recovery as a PB31IMG
2)flash superuser files in recovery.
more info on that process here: http://androidforums.com/incredible...egain-root-s-off-htc-unlocked-bootloader.html

IMO,the easier way to do things would be to follow the sugestions in step 8 of the original post to update the radio and hboot, and flash the stock rom in recovery, wich is a good way to get your feet wet with rom flashing. if you dont like being on the stock rooted rom, there are many custom roms to chose from- the inc 1 is still a nice device with some decent development still going. just try a few till you find one you like!

This guide was fantastic and I was able to root my DInc without any hitches. My question is regarding the cleanup in Step 8. If I am flashing a [ROM] Stock rooted OTA 4.08.605.15 onto my DInc after rooting, is it necessary to update the Radio and HBoot, or are any updates to those included with the Stock ROM? Thanks!

Radio and hboot are separate from the ROM, which consequently means they are not backed up in a nandroid backup either. :)

im glad the guide was helpful. as expressed in the FAQ(step 9) it is my opinion that it is worthwhile to update your hboot and radios. in general newer firmware is going to be more stable, reliable, work beter with newer software, etc.

but the choice, ultimately,is yours :) just holler if you have further questions :)

Hi I have been attempting to do this for about 6 hours now, and I have been stuck at this step:

adb reboot bootloader

it may take several seconds, but this command should boot your phone into the "fastboot" screen wich is white with a bunch of colored writing. once this happens, make sure your phone is still being seen in fastboot. type:

For so long I am about to scratch my eyes out.. So my problem is everytime I run that it is telling me that the device isn't found, but it is showing up in device manager.

It is not showing up when I type "adb devices" unless I am outside of hboot, but I need to be in hboot in order to do that step, and I am really just frustrated, and tired :)

actually,what youre experiencing is correct.

adb devices and adb commands in general, are for use with the phone in the booted OS.

when you are in fastboot, you need to use fastboot devices

I just joined the forum so I could thank you scotty85. I have had this dinc since they first came out and was really just wanting to upgrade. I'm hardheaded though and can't get past the whole losing the unlimited data plan thing. So I sit here in 2.2 froyo, but unlocked/S-off. Hboot=1.07, radio=2.15.00.07.20, software=3.26.605.1.

Now you know I have questions...lol. I have been reading like nuts, but can I ask for now what I do from here. I am getting OTA notice for 4.08.605.2. What happens if I take the OTA. There are some things I still need to learn before I do anything else. I've been careful so far. I want to try ROMs, say Touch of Blue. Radios, software version, kernals, Hboot. Its all starting to meld together into a ball in my skull.

One note, I have ROM Manager installed. Will that make life easier. ;-)

Thanks again,
fewjr

if you had the stock recovery in place, you could take the OTA,but it will NOT work with cw installed. best thing to do is flash a rom,if youve allready updated your hboot and radio. check out steps 8 and 9 for more inf, there is a link for a stock rom you could flash to "get your feet wet" so to speak,as well as a link for how to flash roms.

rom manager may give the impression of making life easier, but prolly best advice i could give is dont use it ;)

if you want to use it,you can,but make sure youre comfortable using the menus in recovery to manually do things first,as thats what youll need to do when rom manager fails you. i personally do not use it at all.

So if I tried to accept the OTA it would just fail, or would it mess up what I've done with your help so far? I don't want to use that anyway. I need to find out how to stop the OTA notice. Its driving me nuts. I was going to try Touch of Blue for starters.

Well I did notice that when I try to download a ROM with ROM Manager it tells me "You must have CWM Recovery installed before continuing! Install the recovery through ROM Manager first". But its already installed as a result of your tutorial. The only thing I can think is it doesn't see the version I have. You tell me...I'm guessing.

I haven't updated my HBOOT or radio as you can see from my post. Like I said, I'm being careful. I need my phone...lol. Still trying to decipher what to do first. So I need to do that before I flash a ROM?? I'm not sure how to update just those two things alone. I am looking, but I wouldn't mind a link to some info. Thank you for responding so quickly.

Sorry....I just re-read steps 8 & 9. I don't remember reading that the other day. So I think that will answer some of my questions. Just want to make sure I do it right since you say it could brick my phone.

from folks accepting OTAs with a custom recovery, ive seen everything from a completely harmless failure,to an unrecoverable bootloop(read: hard bricked) granted that last case is extreme, and not likely, try and aviod taking an OTA with a recovery installed.

flashing a custom rom(wich typically have the updater scripts removed),or a current stock rom, will stop the OTA notices. so if youd like to try touch of blue,go for it :)

you may need to have rom manger install cw before it will use it. but again,i dont recomend it.

I haven't updated my HBOOT or radio as you can see from my post.

id have to check on your baseband, but at first glance looks like youre on the newest radio and hboot. the newest baseband number excapes me ATM,but 1.07 is definately the newest hboot :)

I do have the latest Hboot (1.07), but my radio is way old I think (2.15.00.07.28). On my phone in setting> about phone> software information, I have software version 3.26.605.1 and baseband, is same as above radio(2.15.00.07.28). I am still downgraded to 2.2 froyo. So from what I gather I just need an up to date baseband (radio)....right? Froyo is my ROM....right? Maybe Touch of Blue will take care of both the ROM and the radio at the same time or CM7 maybe?

In step 8 you say to update radio and hboot by renaming that zip file. The file says PB31IMG-4.08.605.15-radio.zip for the radio. That looks like a software version number. Is the radio and the baseband the same thing? How did I end up with hboot 1.07 but an old.radio. Keep in mind I followed your tutorial over at XDM before I read your here more (http://androidforums.com/incredible...ow-unlock-downgrade-achieve-s-off-htcdev.html).

I think I may have confused the whole world here. The numbers I'm looking at here are software version, baseband (which I thought was the radio number) and Hboot version and of course 2.2 froyo. Sorry for being long winded here.

Radio and hboot are separate and flashed separately and never included in a ROM. You can find the latest radio here also:
Radios | PvilleComp's

Any newer rom will upgrade you to gingerbread.

correct-4.08.605.15 is a build number, and is the most recent one(known to me) for the original incredible. sorry,i prolly confused you by adding the hboot version(1.07) inthe hboot, zip, but not the radio version in the radio zip.

radio and baseband are indeed the same thing. :)

you have 1.07 because thats prolly what you had when you started the process. that one of the htcdev quirks,is that when you donwgrade, the hboot is for some reason not "upgraded" to the older hboot.

glad you made it here to AF,hopefully your questions are now being answered :). my computer time is limited,so i dont make it to xda as much. i did try and update the OP there to match this one,but it woundnt let me because the post was too long

ok then, thanks. So the zip in step 8 will take me where I want to go, but I only need the radio beings I have the oldest one know. According to this [RADIO] HTC Incredible Radios [PB31IMG.zip] (Updated: 07 Sept 2011) - Droid Incredible - RootzWiki, its the last one on the list. Thanks for the list you put up also sdrawkcab25.

So after I use the radio zip in step 8 I will see build or software number 4.08.605.15 in "About phone" and a newer radio or baseband number. I will give it a shot. Once I do that...then I can try to flash a ROM like CM7. Thats when i should see a different Android version number right? Instead of 2.2 that I downgraded to.

I'll be in touch.....I'm having a blast!

actually, all flashing the new radio will do is change your baseband number in about phone. your build number will stay the same, until you flash something that changes it :)

you can flash a new rom at any time, prior to,or after changing the radio,it really doesnt matter. the new radio will hopefully make things better,so id do it sooner than later, but you dont have to for a working phone. roms are not baseband dependent on the inc one, like they are for some newer devices.

flashing cm7 will indeed update your android version to 2.3.x,and your build number to something else as well :)

Hi Scotty. New to the forum. Thanks for the awesome tutorial. Original Incredible. Everything worked great until I tried to flash a stock ROM in step 8. Failed halfway through the install (see below). Any ideas? I tried the odexed and deodexed version of the stock ROMs in step 8. Same general fail message for both. md5s are good. Factory reset, wipe cache, wipe Dalvik, install zip from sdcard.

Fail message:

Opening update package...

E:Error in /sdcard/Stock_inc_4.08.605.15_deodexed.zip

Installation aborted.

You'd be the second person to report that with that particular rom, I'll see if I can fire up my incredible and get it flashed...

Ok, I tried a different ROM and it worked fine (Touch of Blue). Must be the stock ROM from step 8. Luckliy I did the backup and all is good. Thanks again Scotty for the great guide.

Hello again,
I have an update for you. I went ahead and flashed Touch of Blue also. CM7 mentioned something about Gapps and Nightlys. I've been working twelve hour shifts all week and I just wanted to get to the next step without figuring something else out.

So the flash went well until I went to check my apps. I guess I really didn't understand Titanium, but I did do a full backup with it dispite that. When I went to the market everything I've bought or downloaded wasn't there. Finally something popped up about phone I.D. had "been recently changed, do you want to revert". So I did and my apps came back in the market. Things work a little differently now but I'm still up and running and having fun...lol.

Hi Guys,
Well all seems to be well here. I haven't flashed the radio yet though. I'm going to use the one in step 8, so I renamed it in Win7, put it on SD card and checked it and it is named PB31IMG.zip. Before I do this can you tell me if I need to wipe or format anything first. When I flashed the ROM I wiped dalvik and formatted everything except EMMC and SDcard as per cmlusco. I don't think I have to go that far do I?

No need to wipe anything, just flash thru hboot.
