Root how to get .apk files onto my phone

A friend of mine emailed me some apps for my evo. He said i could install them right from the email but when i tried i get an error saying that it could not retrieve the file. I then connected the phone to my computer via usb but now i dont know what folder to put the apk file into. Can anyone help?

Just them them on the SD card anywhere. Then use a file browser to look at the files and click on it. The installer will open up and take over just like installing something from the market.

And assuming you've never done this before, do the following first:

Menu->settings->Applications-> check "Unknown sources" if it isn't already checked.
