Help how to get screen to light up after notification

how do i get the screen on my epic to light up when i receive a new notification?

There are some free apps on the market that do this for text messaging, I use one called "SMS Popup" that is OK, but sometimes buggy (I miss messages at times). Maybe someone else knows another way... to me it's insane that this isn't built into the OS
