Help How to have GS4 push emails

needhelp7

Lurker
I currently have to refresh my emails to have new emails show, or wait 5 minutes before they're automatically synced. I want them to come up automatically as soon as they're receive. How can this be done? I've searched the Internet for hours. I'd rather keep the default email client.

I already have sync turned on, but there's no setting to have emails pushed as they're sent to my accounts. Both Hotmail and Gmail are experiencing this issue on my VA

Thank you for any help

Two things have to happen for push mail:
  1. Your mail server must be capable of IMAP
  2. You have to configure your mail connection for IMAP (you won't be able to simply edit your existing setup from POP to IMAP

Hi there, I just tried this and I'm still not getting instant (push) emails. Is there anything else I can try? Thank you

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the preinstalled mail application supports push emails.

Yeah I kinda came to that conclusion just recently. It may seem trivial but there are many small annoyances such as this with this phone that I just can't take. Decided to exchange my phone for an iPhone :/

For what it's worth you can use 3rd party apps such a maildroid, k9 and so forth, but they don't give the same types of embedded notifications as the default app (e.g., the little mail icon at the top of your phone) and some of them aren't free. You can use the Gmail app too and if you use exchange you can push Hotmail emails. Hope this helps someone in the future and hopefully this gets resolved altogether eventually.

Hmm. I use the default GMail and email app. I get push emails just fine. I have an Exchange account set up as IMAP on my default email app.

Yes, GS4 stock email app supports push emails with Exchange account only, non POP3 like Comcast, etc.

Nothing to do with the stock mail app but the mail protocol. POP3 doesnt support active sync so it wont support push. Youd need a mail server such as Exchange or GMAlL (although gmail provably works because it is using its dedicated app, if you use pop3 to retrieve gmail it would still not push).

Push on gmail apparently stopped recently because google decided to stop paying microsoft for IMAP. I am veeeerrrrrrrrrrry annoyed about it, hate pushing refresh to see emails. But I hate outlook too. Alternatives anyone? No I won't buy an iphone either.

I hadn't heard that, but if true, you could do what I did - replaced the stock Email and Gmail apps with AquaMail. It supports Push via IMAP, unified inbox, and has the option for distinctive notifications per account. It works well with Juice Defender too.

Set up your hotmail as a exchange account. It has a push setting available. Thats what i did and it works good now. you will have to add it as a new account and del your old
