Help How to keep Hero completely turned off while charging?

My son is using his HTC Hero on a long hiking trip and is using a solar charger to charge it. His plan was to charge up the charger during the day (internal AA's), then charge the phone with it at night. Right now, he says that the phone insists on being on while charging. He tells me that even if the phone is off, the screen comes on when he plugs in the charger. How can he make it stay completely off while charging?

Thanks!

Normally, if the handset is switched off you can just charge it. It should not turn back on.

It might just be the way this charger is interacting with the handset that is turning it on. Since it is not an OEM charger it may cause the handset to act strangely.

Just to check the obvious...

Simply pressing the red button doesn't shut off the phone, it turns off the display. Turning the phone off completely requires a long press, and then selecting the option to power down.

If the phone is on with the screen turned off, plugging in a charger will turn on the screen until the screen times out, or it is turned off manually. Once it is turned off, after this brief period, it should stay off.

Anything else is a potential problem.
