How to make a .tar file?

Atma

I want to make a .tar file so a recovery can be flashable using Odin for Samsung phones. After searching, I've seen 7zip is supposed to do it but Odin crashes immediately when trying to flash the file. I also saw Cygwin can be used. I looked into downloading it but it has so many different packages I'm not sure what to use.

Any ideas for Windows 8?

.tar is not really a native format to the windows environment. cygwin is used to emulate a unix environment as that's what .tar is native too.

I can't advise whats best for windows because I simply use Ubuntu. Setting up cygwin applications can be long and tedious sometimes.

If all else fails, I'd recommend downloading VMware player (free) and making a virtual machine of Ubuntu 12.04. From within Ubuntu, you simply right click the files > Compress - then select .tar

But of course thats an "if all else fails" approach, which may be a bit long winded.

running a live linux will do the same thing with out the install on a virtual. Everyone should have a good live linux around anyways :D

Yeah but the good thing about vmware is you can run both at once. Also, you can mount the iso and boot the vm without install. This way no burning to cd or bootable usb, hence the recommendation ;)

I'm download Ubuntu 12.10 right now. I've already downloaded the VMWare Player. I also downloaded the USB installer from pendrivelinux.com and think I'll try it on an 8gb flash drive I have laying around. I'm only planning to use it to make a .tar file. If I find out I like Ubuntu I may install it a different way.
