How To Make These Forums More Usable - Asking for Suggestions!

Pyro,
I hope my post wasn't misunderstood as being overly critical
.
Nope. I did not take your post or anyone else's as being overly critical.
Its tough to not take stuff personally when you are invested in this sub-forum like you are.
usually that is true, but in this case, it's not the case. True, I have invested alot in this forum, mainly for selfish reasons since I am also getting the EVO, but overall, I am like that and do it throughout the other sections as well. But this one is right now taking up most of my time trying to keep it in line.

But bottom line, its not about me, its about the members and what they feel would make for a smoother community interaction, hence the reason for this thread.

As for searching and make it more specific. hmmm
Only thing I can think of is to uses the " " along with the word or phrase you are searching for.

For example: There is a thread in the EVO section titled "Will it blend?????"

You are looking for a thread that had the phrase EVO smoke,
If you do a simple search and type that in without the quotes, the results are 3 pages long.
If you add the quotes, it comes back with just that one thread where it appears in.
So the more specific one is along with the use of " " will get you a more fine tuned search result.

My vote is with these sub threads:

Evo-Roms, Themes, and Upgrades
All Things Root
Tips and Tricks
Support and Troubleshooting
Accessories

Sticky top subjects, then move important info. from threads to the top sticky threads based on info. this offers everyone info without sifting 25 pages to find it. Like the page Bill had with EVO info. and links. That was great, but also means somebody has to do it.

As you have seen on the EVO threads. Many people have come and gone because they just can't keep up. I took a break for 1 wk. came back and seen 100 more pages and said forget it.

Good Luck!

How about a weekly featured sticky thread? Once a week, you mods could pick an epic thread that would be featured on top of the stickies. Then make a second sticky that would index all the weekly features. Think of it as a Hall of Fame for epic threads.

Too many sticky threads. Instead of sticky threads just provide a sub-forum for each.

Example:

  1. Evo 4G News and Announcment
  2. Rooting Evo 4G
  3. Evo 4G Accessories
  4. Evo 4G Apps
  5. Evo 4G Rants
  6. Evo 4G Accolades
You can name it what you want, the above list is just an example.

Instead of banning people, just create a Banned Section where the banned can go and let the flaming continue with a "Post at Your Own Risk Warning." It should be the only place they can go on the site and must stay there for a minimum of 15-30 days to resolve all disputes with apologies and then return. Make that section viewable to others though so we can keep track of who the real hotheads are and simply not respond to them once they come back into the general forums unless the responses are according to site rules and always respectful even when pointing out differences of opinion.

Then have a 3 strikes rule. Three times in Banlandia = permanent removal from site with the second time being a 6-month or 12-month suspension.

I don't think the real rousers will come back if they make it to step 2.

The only outstanding item then would be that people in Banlandia should be able to get a general appeal to another Moderator or any oversight official if there's a question about why being banned. I do believe there are instances where things quickly blow up not by what's being said by one person rather how it's being interpreted by someone else.

Oh and finally, change the site rules to include that calling anyone a name or directly insulting will get an immediate warning with the second instance going straight to Banlandia.

Good gracious, I hope I don't ever go there if you adopt any or all of this. :)

Normally a warning is issued first, either in the thread or via pm's. Then infractions go out to those involved and then bans if they do not heed those warnings and infractions. True, sometimes they go straight to bans, cause after a while, one sees a pattern and knows who the trouble makers are. There is no need to create a Banlandia section and watch the inmates going at it, cause most often than not, they already did that in the thread and thus is the reason they are banned. As for appeals, no matter who it is that's banned, has a right to appeal their case to the admins. And I say admins, because most often than not the mod who banned them has already set their mind and only an admin can overturn the ban if they feel it should be.
As for the site rules, I believe they are as straight forward. Everyone and I mean everyone had to agree to them when they joined. Whether they read them or not, that's for debate. Plus a lot of sections also have forum specific rules that go further.

I guess I'm not here enough to know who's getting banned or causing trouble. And I just drop out of threads or conversations whenever I think things might be headed that way.

If people want to start a thread, I think it should have to be reviewed by a MOD or a Guide first so we don't have so many duplicate threads. Once the MOD or Guide notices that there is already a thread, it can just be added to the existing one.

While good in theory, I think that would turn a lot of people off. An alternative may be that before a poster has 10 posts and new threads they try to start needs it approved.

But still, that's a lot of work :P

Concerning an app subforum... I read the app forum thats already here and the app game forum. However, I wouldn't mind seeing a subforum dedicated to apps for the EVO. Not the "ooohhh I just downloaded tetris" but more for apps that will be rolling out taking advantage of the better processors in todays phones, the forward facing camera, the hdmi out, etc. I have no desire to know what app 5000 other people use for texting, but a place for the more "EVO-centric" apps would be nice.

I would appreciate it if we had subforums under the main Evo forum. Something like:

Accessories
Applications
Games
Development
ROMs
etc.

Not trying to sound like I'm harping on anyone, but I was just curious as to why we still had a "Rumors and Speculation" sticky. Also do you plan on taking the "Got my Evo" sticky? on the 4th?

Also is anyone planning on working on a massive FAQ sticky? I think if it is well done it could really help cut down on duplicates.

The "Speculation and Ruumors" will be unstickied on the 4th, and a new thread will take its place. TS can give more details, I'm not sure of the exacts.

That was the plan. On the 4th the Rumor one gets closed and users are expected to use the forums to post about the EVO (much like what they are doing now).

As for the stickies, hopefully the admins have the sub-forums up and running and allow the staff to move the threads to their correct spots and divide these stickies among the subforums.

I aggree to a degree, however there is such a thing as hitting the search button.... and if that isn't enough while your creating your thread an auto-search that let's you know that there is already something similar....

Oh hell to to no. We do too much as it is. Do you realize how many posts and threads are created. We wont keep up. lol

Bek & Twospirits I appreciate your hard work and thought process behind making this forum a more pleasurable, and insightful place for noobs like me lol

I have one suggestion and although it may be a long shot, I figured what the hell. I am not sre if this has been discussed previously, but if so, mods please delete...

Kevin from crackberry.com has a blackberry 101 lecture series that I used to follow religiously and it really made my experience as a bb user a very smooth transition from symbian. I was wondering if you guys could somehow put together the same type of learning series but for android of course.

I know many members would follow it and I for one found it extremely helpful and exciting as a bb user, to know that every week I would learn something new. It was very intuitive and definitely made the challenge of learning a new OS a great one.

Although I am a noob, I for one would love to assist you in any way, shape, or form if this idea is even possible. I have provided you a link from crackberry.com in case you weren't familiar with it:

BlackBerry 101 How-To Lecture Series | CrackBerry.com

Look forward to being a part of this project if possible!

I think Having Different Categories and then in each have a sub forum. It would be easier for people to go to the section they are most interested in and then within that do a search. I've read the stickies but i'm sure a lot of people don't.
